Take your time with Mustangs OP, you're still a real young guy and youve got plenty of time to learn and mod stangs down the road. I couldn't imagine what an asshat I would have been at 16 with a stang. We all like to show off some but you need to choose that time and place wisely because the consequences can be terminal. I can start linking dozens of articles from teens wrecking from driving like A-holes just this year around here. A kid just got done wrapping a 2011 Dodge Charger around at tree with three of his buds in the car. Now 3 of the 4 are dead and the survivor cant even communicate.

Sounds like a pretty good deal and it will be plenty for a starter Mustang. These cars are pretty stout and reliable. I havent had to replace one faulty part(that I didnt break) on my Mustang since I bought it in 2008 @ 50,000 miles. I'm nearing 100,000 miles total and have been supercharged for almost 10,000 miles. I've also stayed current on maintenance though, that helps.

Sounds like you're on the right path.

I just got mine about 5 weeks ago too. '02 GT Vert 5spd w/57k miles for $8500. Lowered, CAI, and catback already done. Bought it from a middle aged respectable couple. Good luck with you searches, and remember, there are those diamonds in the rough, you just have to be patient.

These cars are so fun to drive, which can make some of us push the limits a little too much sometimes. Be very, very careful.

These listings (from your area)should give you an idea of the kind of car and mileage you can expect for that money....and even they could probably be talked down $500+. The convertible is a bit extreme in design, but it serves the purpose as a good example of price to mileage.

$7600 2002 67,000 manual v8 http://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto/2399113329.html
$7500 2002 49,000 convertible http://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto/2416761640.html

I suggest you get on craigslist sites for the cities and states surrounding you and find Mustangs that are a similar year 2002, 2003 between 40,000 and 75,000 for less than $7,500. Then either buy the one you find or use it's specs as leverage to talk the guy down. Meaning, if you take the listings above and mention that they have 30,000 to 50,000 miles less for the same price...you should be able to get him to go close to $1,000 off. Just my advice after 17 years of buying cars. Negotiation skills and leverage is everything when buying a car.

Wow, I may have paid too much according to that first ad (non vert). That looks like a pretty darn good deal.

Well the first ad is for a GT coupe like you said, which are about $1000 cheaper than a GT convertible on average. I called the guy with the convertible to see if it was a V6, and it is a 3.8L... so the price is basically a reflection of the mileage. But he even told me he'd be willing to take $7,000.

I paid $8,000 for my GT convertible with 80,000 miles on it. If I would have been patient I could have maybe found it between $7,000-$7,500 with 10,000-30,000 less miles.

So it's not like they raked you over the coals. I think you could have saved around $500 for the mileage your car has. Patience is the key to buying these cars.

yeah, im trying to find the best deals, i also have my dad helping me out and he is amazing at doing deals n stuff like that, he pretty much buys stuff all the time and sells it for profit...i almost had 2 mustang bought b4 this one but they fell through the cracks...1 b.c the mustang was a total piece, and the second the guy was being an a**hole about it so i told him to screw off... that's the other thing too i dont want to go too far away to look at a car because you cant really judge just by the ad
