The 245/35-18 tires are actually smaller than stock, with a 24" working diameter (24/75" actual dia.); the stock 245/45-17 are 24.9" working dia. (25.7" actual).

I had not done that calculation originally and just assumed they were stock diameter equivalent as is generally done when mounting 18" wheels.

This creates a horse of a different color, and negates my comment above.

My tires are 235/45/18.. I thought they were 245/35 but I was wrong. Does that make it a little easier now.

Matt,
I finally got around to responding to your PM.
I would try one of those recommended tests before I did anything else.
Let me know how it turns out.

Went for a quick spin today. In 3rd gear while using my GPS i was clocked at 50mph while speedo was at 60. I was between 2500-2600 rpms. What gears do u think I have? I used the rear axle caculator and they had me at gear ratio 3.73.. I do have 235/45/18. Does tire size make much of a difference. I really want to figure this out already and not have to be worrying about it. thanks

The 3rd gear/2500-2600 rpm/50 mph actual speed, with 235/45-18 tires¹ indicates 3.73s. However the indicated 60/actual 50 mph does not fit the math for the 3.73s and the larger diameter (2.5% larger than stock) tires.

But as I have never even ridden in a slushbox Mustang I am not 100% sure that the torque converter would be locked up at 50 in 3rd--perhaps one of the more knowledgeable forum members can respond to this issue. If the converter was not locked up it could skew the gear guesstimator's math.

¹ - These are remarkably skinny tires, if you don't mind my asking how did you end up with them?

I purchased the car with the tires already on it. So not sure where they got the. So ur saying that u don't think I have 3.73, but a different type rear gear ratio?

I don't know for sure because I do not know if the torque converter is locked up at 50 mph in 3rd gear--if it is then you have 3.73s, if not then it might be some other gearset.

Maybe someone with some automatic tranny experience can answer that question--right now there are too many unknowns, to nail one thing down jack up the rear end and count the number of turns of the drive shaft for one turn of the wheel--that's your gear ratio...

Is there an echo in here?

We lost our power for 30 minutes or so and I thought the first post was lost (couldn't see it), so I reposted--go figure...
