Had a thought...Cheap and easy 3.73 gear install idea for the 8.8" SRA
#21
um ok you go do that and tell us how much gear whine you have.
OP I hope you have realized what a bad idea all of this is. nothing wrong with used gears but you have to make sure anytime you do gears you have to reshim and you must measure with proper tools

Yeah, I didn't know how it all worked, so now that I sorta understand it, it's new gears or no gears since I have to shim everything anyway. There's no way I would put a foreign part in without checking clearances don't worry.

My question I guess thats on track with this thread.
Is can you swap the whole axle from explorer with the 3:73 gears to let say a 99-04 GT.?
Is that a direct swap?
I really thought thats what the OP was getting at or trying to ask when thread started not removing the gears or locker itself and swapping into Mustang axle.

Although lets run with that since my idea died. Thad be a nice swap for a cobra owner.

I actually have done it, twice now. My rear is silent, with both 3.73's and 4.10's.
with the shims, you're adjusting the tolerances of the carrier to the housing, and the pinion depth to the housing.
Maybe with some off brand no name gears you could have some noise, but with frpp it's a direct swap.
but let's be serious.. we're talking about installing junkyard explorer gears, if you think they're going to be quiet you're fooling yourself.
And btw, Ive checked my pinion depth, and backlash/wear pattern with the OEM tools ford dealers use to set up gears.

I bet there are a lot of explorers running around with factory gears that make little to no noise. There is a much better chance of vehicles having no gear noise when they go into the junkyard than not. I could be wrong, but I feel like its the shimming that causes the noise, not the fact that the gears have been used before.
