Default 99 axle assembly swap to fifth gen

hey guys! my first post after buying my first mustang!
so i just bought myself a 99 mustang gt last weekend, everything looked great. after 2 test drives everything checked out perfectly. Then the worst happened. On my 200 mile drive home after purchasing the car, the engine developed a tick and the differential started to fall apart. Now my first question is, is it possible to swap out the rear end with the rear end from a 2005-2011 mustang? the cheapest used rear end from a 99-04 i can find is 800 bucks. or i could get a brand new 05-11 axle assembly for 1300. any help?

The s197 rear ends (2005-2010) will not work. It has different locations for the control arm mounts and I think its a different length. Look on places like craigslist and corral for a diff. For $800 you could probably get a fully built unit that is slightly used.
