Clutch replacement for 2004 Mustang GT
I've got a 2004 GT, 40th Anniv edition with about 90k miles on it. Last time it was in the shop for some maintenance the tech said the clutch was in the "yellow" condition and it turns out I've noticed that the clutch seems to engage closer to the point where the pedal is let all the way out rather than in the middle which I'm used to (of course, my "perception" could be altered by the simple fact that the tech mentioned it on the maint report - lol). Anyway, the car is in the shop today getting a new fuel pump (the damn thing just died all of a sudden and wouldn't start up again) and I got a quote from the service advisor. He said that the clutch kit itself for my specific engine (4.6L, SOHC) costs about $800, so the total would be about $1500. My main question is... does this seem reasonable for a clutch replacement? Seems a little expensive to me, but then again I've never had a clutch replaced on this car before.

I say 'a lot expensive'... at American Muscle they start at 250 for the clutch kit, and unless you have some serious mods, you can get better ones in the 300's -400's which is still a lot less than 800.
700 for install also sounds a lil high, but I don't really have anything concrete to go on there.

I have no mods on my car at all... it's still all original. The service advisor mentioned that there are 3 different clutch kits for my car, depending on the specific engine and he said "of course" mine would need the most expensive one of the three. Serves me right for buying the GT Premium 40th Anniversary Edition.
Based on what he said, I'm wondering how I would know which specific clutch kit should be used with my car???

a "GT Premium 40th Anniversary" can use the same clutch as a regular GT, look for clutch kits for a TR3650 trans. if you go on americanmuscle.com theyll have the years that are compatible im pretty sure

Valeo clutch kit supports 500-550 hp, comes with clutch pressure plate throw out bearing pilot bearing and alignment tool for $289 and is a direct replacement for the 3650 I think upr products carries it.

The absolute last place you want to pay to do any non warranty work is a Dealership (Stealership). Take it to local shop and have them do it a Mustang clutch is one of the easiest clutches to change out there. Go to any of the sites listed above and purchase the clutch kit with Pilot Bearing and throw out bearings take it to a local shop and save yourself about $800 over the Stealership

Who is running over 6000rwhp??? (one extra zero perhaps)
OP,
The price you were quoted is outrageous! As mentioned above, I would stay away from those guys for basic service items. A clutch should only cost you $200-$400 depending upon how strong of a clutch you think you need. Any decent shop can install the clutch for you.
GOOD LUCK and let us know how this turns out for you!
