really want to get a gt

I bought mine in Jan 2012 for under $9000.00 with 58k miles. Convertible too, but automatic.
Don't be afraid to look nationwide. Mine was 2 hours away luckily, but I was close to pulling the trigger on one in GA.
My advice to you is this: Don't fall in love with the first one you see. Be judgmental. Look it over carefully. If the car you're looking at isn't exactly what you want or what you want to pay, then don't. You'll regret buying something out of desire. Take your time, find what you want and be happy.

For 12k you could pick up a nice 99/01 cobra or mach 1. The main difference between a cobra/mach 1 and gt is the engine. Cobra/mach 1's come with a 4v and gt's come with a 2v. 4v>2v
With that said, you should be able to pick up a nice gt for ~8k. As others have said, just be patient and be very thorough and you will be happy.

thanks for the replies guys. yeah, a lot to think about. i guess i really just need to drive a few to see what kind of engine i want. i drove 2 mustangs when i first turned 16-17 and i remember they were like 2000, 2003 but i couldn't even remember what the engine was. wouldn't have mattered to me at the time anyway ha.
before i get started doin that. how do you think a gt 4.6l v8 would compare to my 97 supercharged v6 bonneville? obviously if im gettin a mustang i want lots of power but i dont street race so it wouldn't matter THAT much. i just really like drivin fast

if i were you a GT could be a good option, but with 12k you should be able to find nice 03-04 Mach 1's or 99-01 Cobra's. You could also look at 96-98 cobra's, all these have more power and more potential than a GT

sorry to bump this up but thanks again for the info. I've still been reading a lot online and a lot around these forums (i got a good amount of time of researching to do as i am saving money for a while too).
Could anyone tell me how this will affect my insurance? I currently drive a 97 V6 supercharged bonneville. Im 22, in college (if that even matters). I've had 2 speeding tickets I think and my insurance now is like 56/month or around 350/6 months.
*edit* i should prob mention i plan on getting a 03-04 gt v8

Picked my 04 up last 1 year ago with 30K miles on her, bone stock besides 3.73s for $13.5. Traded in my 6 and they gave me $3.2 for it so give or take I spent a little over $10K for mine. 5 speed aswell. Just shop around and do the mods yourself like everyone has suggested. Less problems usually.

hello mustang owners! so i really want to get a mustang gt im thinkin probably within the next 6 months so i can save a little more money. i think the most im willing to spend is about 12k and want the 8 cylinder. im just wonderin how much everyone got theirs for with what mileage and if it was in good condition (pic would be cool) i'm 22 and the only car i've bought was my brother's 97 bonneville when i was 16 so i havn't had experience car shopping - i'm very hesitant going into it but i really like these cars
