Default What to do, what to do?

My uncle just got a 2001 GT and is looking for advice on what mods to go with for his stock 2v. I initially told him a CAI but just from the little reading I just did everyone says that the stock one is good enough. Alright, fair enough, but now he is back at square one..

What would y'all go with first? He was thinking about lowering it but I don't know much about the suspension on these models and don't know what is a safe drop or what brands to go with, I would assume Konis for shocks and some form of name brand springs? What would y'all do first?

Thanks in advance!!

Without discounting that thread completely (I read it too), a CAI will show dyno improvements of around 8hp with the good brands, K&N even more due to the well-constructed filter. I am sure a good flowing exhaust of his sound enjoyment level should be next. Synthetic fluids for Engine, Trans, and rear-end have yielded over 5hp on a dyno (royal purple-hot rod tv dyno). If there is not too many miles on it (under 100k), then I would get the heads ported/polished along with a valve job. Will cost a bit, but if you pull them off and drop them off it will be a whole lot cheaper. I did that to my 1993 Vette and it woke it up a ton! Just throwing ideas....

CIA, save your money. Just buy a K&N drop in filter. Question - Is your uncle after looks or power?

Looks: Definitely lowering springs are #1. 315 rear tires. Shorty antenna. Nice exhaust. Window tint.

Power: The 2V engine responds well to boost. A good supercharger or turbo kit will yield the best gains. Long tube headers. SCT tuner. 4.10 gears. 100 shot juice. Then the bolt-ons (plenum, throttle body, underdrive pulleys, etc) . All which will need the tuner.

If money is an issue, the minimum would have to be: Lowering springs, Exhaust, Gears, and Tuner.

He just got Flowmasters installed on it last week. Money I don't think is as much of an issue for him as it is for me, in my young age and low income.

But I think he is wanting to go more for performance in general, not just power. How much do tuners usually help out with mods on these cars? I know they are needed but didn't know if they helped like they do on the S197. Also, sorry for all the noob questions but are the tuners the same as the tuners for the S197 including tunes?

Wish I had saw that thread 5 yrs ago.. OP gears (410'S) are a must and since your Uncle has Flows I would suggest a H-pipe. If your Uncle want's performance do not, I say again do not (speaking from experience) waste money on bolt on's. If it were a 05 + GT I would suggest CAI and tune ASAP but your Uncle's living in the 2V World. I would highly suggest going turbo or S/C..

Just saying...10hp is 10hp (10ft# too). exhaust (done), tune, synthetic and lower. Eibach is great for lowering and better performance. Then get to work deeper if he wants. He's only starting with around 200hp, the above can garner 15/20%. Endless fun possibilities!!

You're speaking from the 5.0 world when yes it's very inexspensive to make 10 rwhp. Now for the 2V world.. 10 HP may cost you up to a grand if not more..Put it like this.. For a grand you can make 10-15 HP. For 1500 bucks you could make 90+...

IF I had a fairly stock Mustang the first things I would personally do to improve performance would be lower it, get some new shocks and struts (I bought Gabriel ones), buy some 4:10 gears and a tuner. Those right there would be the most noticable in my opinion. If I hadn't had to spend so much just to get my car running I would have went Super/turbo charged from the get go, no questions asked. But for now it'll do, and so far has done the job nicely.

Id do Mid pipe, shifter, gears, and tuner first. Then Lower springs, CC plates, chin spoiler and grille delete, shorty antenna and tint. then 100 shot and slicks and you have a low 12 sec car ( if he can drive it) that looks great. Just my opinion though
