Default Higher Mileage Reliability

Hey guys,

Quick Question. Do the 4.6L Motors from the 99-04 have any issues when they start creeping into the 100k+ range?

I am on the hunt again for another mustang and was curious. I have a car with 124k, not a mustang and it still runs like a sewing machine.

Any input would be great.

John

As long as the engine is well cared for, you shouldn't have any issue with 100k+ miles. As with any car, if you don't change the oil or beat on it without letting it warm up, etc, you'll substantially lower that life, but with regular maintenance and care 100k should just be a start. The 4.6L is a pretty strong engine.

Many cab companies buy old police cruisers with 100k+ on them, and drive them another 200k or more.

My brother's '99 GT has 175k on it and runs (and looks) like new:

my only warning would be price and shape of car. If the rest of the car looks well taken care of and the price isnt a steal your probably in good shape. I only say this because i bought mine with a rod knock, and i know surprisingly a few others who did the same. But in the defense of being dumb, they were mostly cheaper cars and my guess is not as well overall care, but there are still dishonest people who put heavy weight oil in cars. And from experience these seem to spin bearings pretty easy if you beat on them, with slightly low oil haha.

my 2002 GT has about 144K miles on it, had about 133K when I bought it for $5500 3 years ago. Some things are starting to fall about apart and I have an additional $3500 in it, including a transmission rebuild and new rear axle gears. But the engine itself still runs strong. Interior is still in great shape and the car looks good, and it gets to me to work almost every day.

I had 235K+ on my 02GT before I decided to put the MACH 1 engine and tranny in her. Only issue I was seeing was a slightly wet rear main seal. But nothing major. I plan on re-gasketing the engine as well as the rear main and using it in in a F250 I bought with a blown engine...
