Default 3.73 gears

I am new Mustang owner. I have a 04 GT with manual transmission. I would like to change out the gear to a 3.73. I did a search on the forum and it shows I have a 8.8 rear end. It was suggested that I would need one of those handheld tuner, like a Diablo(?) to set it up. What would I need completely to have this done? Thanks in advance, Ed.

You will need the gears and I would recommend an install kit with bearings. With a handheld tuner you can recalibrate for the gears so your speedo and odometer isn't off.

Thanks for the replies. I should have stated that I am not installing them and a mechanic I use suggested that I need to get a tuner. So I will get the gears and install kit with bearings.

You might need new seals too but your mechanic can get them. Definitely ring and pinion and the bearing kit as well.. get the correct gear oil as well...

I went with 3.73 in my manual and although its a lot of fun, im still wondering what 4.10 would have felt like. Or even 3.90

On An N/a Or Centri Blown Motor Run 4.10 Or 4.30s So You're Not Disappointed. 3.73S Or 3.55S For Twin Screws.

Also make sure u get the Ford Racing brand 3.73.......or get the 4.10's.

Also, I recommend a ford racing aluminum driveshaft..

I have 4.10's. I would have kicked myself if I did end up getting the 3.73's...

Having both 3.73's and 4.10's now, I feel that I have more fun with the 4.10's. 5th gear is usable to pass while on the freeway and the car doesn't seem to fall flat after 90 or so. But as of now, my track times slipped 3 tenths with the 4.10's compared to my 3.73's. But that may be due to a need for some new tires.
