To replace the abs ring it requires the removal of the axle shaft it is mounted to, which gets more involved. Depending on your skill level, it really isn't too difficult. I had a bent axle shaft, took that shaft out. New shaft didn't come with an abs ring so I pressed it off the old shaft and pressed it on the new shaft.

Would also be a good time to check the axle shaft bearings and seals. This is probably the seal your mechanic was referring to leaking.
