Never done 'em but what you've heard is true. You will need to support the engine from above and then drop the K member and everything attached to it. Or pay somebody else to.

look forward to doing this, perfect time to upgrade to a tubular K member so you wont have to do it again and again because the person who drives your old car cant keep a clutch in it!

sorry i went off on a rant

This is one where its truly just a PITA to do, and not hard. Get the car up as high as you can, break out your 250pc craftsman set and get after it. Not much too it.

Most shops are going to charge you 10 B. Franklins to knock this out. You and a buddy can do it in a weekend at worst. Like WhiteFox said, I would strongly recommend doing a tubular k member at the same time. you will thank yourself later for it when your starter goes out. The 1000 bucks you save on an install should cover most of the cost if not all if you shop around of a k member.

Regarding aftermarket K member, you'll also thank yourself the next time to have to drop the transmission for a new clutch. Which will require loosening one or both headers from the heads in order to have the clearance to pull it out. With the stock K, you can forget about accessing those bolts.

Just did this in mine. Did it with a cert ford mechanic in a fully stocked shop, 12 hours labor. Had to replace the EGR tube cuz the threads for that stayed on the old manifold (actually we just deleted it) and we ruined the dipstick getting that out. Those two things added about 6 hours to the job. Everthing else when pretty smooth. We only had to jack the motor and remove the engine mounts to get the headers in though.

You need to check his certification. Should take no longer than 3 hours with smoke and beer breaks.

I have a set of 1 3/4 ARH stainless longtubes with catted X for sale if anyone wants them.
