+1 - It has nothing to do with ego just facts. You specifically said 'without forced induction'. I don't care what anyone else tells you in this thread the fact is equal drivers, the GT will lose everytime to the C6 without forced induction (and a descent set-up at that).
No car is 'out of our league' but be realistic. You need mods to compete...period - and you WILL need them to compete with the new camaro as well.

I'll add another +1 to that

The new Camaro will pretty much be between the Corvette and
the current GTO in performance (more likely closer to the GTO in acceleration
but a much better handler.)
It'll have the same engine, but with a new chassis and suspension and
probably weigh around 3600+ pounds.
I would hope by 2009 Ford will have dropped the 4.6 liter in favor of a larger
V8 (probably a version of their current 5.4 liter, and hopefully it's all aluminum
to keep weight down).

i agree it will take plenty of work and mods, but i totally disagree on needing forced induction. i ran right with one from 40-120 with fewer mods than i have now, with traction issues until 60ish. the "works" as far as bolt-ons, some serious gearing, and a good dyno tune is more than enough IMO. now, as i said earlier in the thread, add a 75 shot and it will upgrade you to the "smoke a c6" category. all of this is assuming a stock vette though of course, which is what the original poster was after i believe

The Shelby GT500 does not have a snowballs chance in hell of beating the C6 in a strait race. For some odd reason the new Shelby may have 500+ horsepower, but it is slow. It may be because it's too heavy (especially in front) and the gears are too high. Not to brag, but I raced a new C6 several times in my Saleen S281 SC and we were always dead even. A few aftermarket mods and he would be in my rear view mirror.
Unfortunately all the advice above is correct…if the 500HP Mustang GT500 can’t beat the standard C6 Corvette there’s little chance for the Mustang GT. Check out Car and Driver:
The Corvette beat the GT500 in every category except one…it didn’t have a back seat for the kids.
how do you get to the 2nd page in that comparison? or is that just a summary and you have to buy the magazine to read the whole thing? MM&FF ran a 12.2 with the GT500. I doubt the C6 could do that.

I'll worry about the Camaro if and when GM builds it. Usually, GM doesn't have a clue. By the time the idea gets watered down by all the commitees involved, we'll see what materializes. Don't assume that the Mustang GT will stay at 300 hp by the time the Camaro is maybe produced.

agree with blk05stang, the stock c6 oughta pull down mid-low 12's (12.4 to 12.3) which would would make it the GT500 by a length or at worst an equal race.
on the math side, the gt500 is probably pulling 450 at the wheel while the stock vette is about 360. on the other hand, the vette has an 800 pound weight advantage (3200 vs ~4000, the GT500 is heavier than the reg. GT due to bigger 5.4 L, s/c, etcc).
so if you believe the rule of thumb that 100 pounds ~= to .1 sec in the 1/4, you have to say the cars are about even with a slight advantage going to the the GT500.

To add to what you said......I to have a s/c saleen and I can get them by a car or two. With a little better tune than what saleen gives us
(im 400rwhp) I can pull a head by a car or so. Its close though...
Now the problem you may find is finding a c6 to race, there out there but most drives are older and dont really want to full around,,,,,,
To add to CK about the camero...........Camero will be stout and tough to beat
also someone said ford by 2009 will have more than 300hp-----well that very well may be true..but ford will always be a step behind the other guys when it comes to power........it is what it is, thats why we modd our cars

Love the Mustang, great car, but I am sorry to inform you but there is an old addage...."Render unto Ceasar that which is Ceasar's" The Corvette is a superior car......naturally aspirated and "no bottle"....there is no way. You are dealing with an underrated 400 hp in the base C6 and a lighter car than the Stang. He now has both an electronically shifted six speed OR manual...along with IRS. The Mustang is a 300 HP car in the true "Muscle Car" mode. If you want to do battle and win against a BowTie something...better go Impala hunting....
PS...better hope the new Camaro base model is a six cylinder....and not a detuned version of the LS6...expect to see a 7.0 ....nearly 500 hp in the Camaro too and with 6 spd. ...IRS too.
If you want to hunt Corvettes...look for a C4...you might stand a chance if he is a poor driver.
