i'm installing them after they arrive without them.
so to anyone that has done this, do you think i'll just be able to slowly relieve the tension on the cam caps, and then do the opposite on the tight cylinders?

It's been done. You can use almost anything to hold the chain in place. The problem is fighting valve spring pressure when putting the new cam in and getting the bearing caps in place. Also doing that without damaging any of them, bending the cam, or knocking any of the roller followers out of place.
I thought about doing it without the tools, but I decided I better just get them. They are stupid expensive for what they are, but it'll make the job easier and done the Ford way.
I'm under the impression now that only someone very experienced with this should do it without the tools as they already know how to do it properly and what to look out for.
SirKnight, for someone who hasn't done
a cam swap yet, very impressive indeed.
you are right on the money on every
point you made, you've obviously done
your homework and are ready to do the
job, should that day ever come.
my personal opinion is to buy the tools, use
them and then sell them, if you want to
recoup some $. i see no problem getting
at least 50% of the cost back.

Yeah I've been researching the crap out of this stuff.
I actually plan on buying my cams in about a month and my plan is to install them in December. I want to get them early so I can have enough time to inspect them to make sure I don't have to get replacements and give enough time to get updated tunes from Brenspeed and Bama. I already bought the two phaser bolts and a bottle of cam lube from Comp Cams. I also picked up (and will install next weekend if it's not raining) the FRPP chrome cam covers. These things look awesome.
BTW, about two months ago I changed my mind yet again (lol!) and will be getting Hot Rods. FRPP FTW! I want the FRPP ported heads but that'll be for another day.
Reselling the tools for 50% to 75% of the new price is a good idea. Or even renting them out is another. I may rent mine out but still plan on keeping them in case I ever feel the need to swap again in the future.
well you are already an honorary hot rod crew
member, because of your support for them
since they came out. so if you do end up
installing them, that's even better.
