Does anyone have any thoughts on my the TPS would fail in the first place? It seems like such a simple device, and I've had two fail now.
I connected an ohm meter to each of the bad sensors, and both had a dead zone when rotated to the wide open throttle position. This is precisely where the vehicle sputters, at wide open throttle. The current "bad" sensor in there now has an ohm value of ~1.6 at wide open throttle. When I compared it to a good sensor, the resistance of the "good" sensor was higher. Either way, there is a dead zone in the "bad" sensor where the resistance doesn't change when rotated.
I've already gone through two sensors, and this weekend I removed the butt connectors provided by Whipple and soldered the wires instead. However, this still leads to the question why a bad butt connection would cause a TPS sensor to fail.
