Default s197 auto tranny?

How much hp and torque can a stock auto tranny hold? im asking because i bought a vortech v3 non intercooled supercharger for my car and want to make sure my auto tranny can hold the power without any problems.

Probably a lot. You see a lot of broken T-5s since the GT 5 speed is an upgraded transmission. My GT has the same tranny and I'm turbocharging, most likely.. I don't forsee a problem! You should get a nice power boost with your setup. You may also benefit lots if turbocharging with some headers.

Well the weak point on the auto transmissions is the same as the manual transmission for the 05-10 GTs, its the input shaft, it is only a 10 spline. They seem to break at different points, some people say that the internals of the motor will need to be forged before the transmission. Unless you do a lot of hard launches at the strip with slicks/drag radials. I personally have not seen one break at the strip yet, but i do know from other forum post that it does happen from time to time. As far as going with the Vortech V3 non-intercooled kit, you should be fine on the stock auto transmission.

It'll be fine. You'll be putting down around 400 rwhp with that kit, which I believe is a supercharger, not a turbo.

Ford rates the 5R55S transmission at 500 ft lbs, the torque number is usually considered mnore important in rating the Auto trans than HP.

It's actually 550 ft/lbs, hence the 55 in the name - but that's AFTER torque multiplication of the TC. If your engine makes that much, you'll be going way over the rating.

Here's what 5R55S stands for: 5R55S (5speed, Rear drive 550 tq rating multiplied @ converter) Short ratio

the kit is supposed to produce 420hp and 385 ft lbs of torque so the converter doubles the torque? will that be safe?

I don't think the converter doubles the torque output.

It has always been my belief that a stock 5r55s can handle 400 lb/ft maximum safely on a daily basis with street tires.
