Default Fuel Rail Crack

Hey guys,

A few days ago, I noticed a strong smell of gas coming from the engine bay. I looked around and saw a small puddle of gas around an injector and figured it was a leaking injector. I took it to the shop yesterday and they inspected the area with the car running. Come to find out there is a crack in the fuel rail and it was spewing a fair amount of gas.

The shop quoted the cost as around $550 plus tax. Does that sound reasonable? Just a little confused, as I could get an aftermarket fuel rail setup for around $400 and they would flow much better than stock.

What do you guys think? Should I get an aftermarket setup instead or would there be no point at my current power level? I plan on getting a springs required stage 2 or 3 comp cam setup within the next few months. Would the stock rails suffice for this?

Thanks in advance,

-Chris

Well that sucks! Changing the fuel rails is not that involved and the stock fuel rails are good for more power than any cam will give you. I would probably replace them myself, unless that price includes parts.

If you have any basic wrenching skills, I would recommend you try it yourself as that is a lot of money for something you can do in about an hour or so. About the only unique tool that you need is a fuel line release tool that can be purchased from about any auto parts store for <$10. And you could just pick up these from EagleStroker for $65 and have a nice set of stock rails that were already polished http://mustangforums.com/forum/s197-...rage-sale.html

Thanks for the plug Doug!

Honestly man, a monkey could do this. That is a major rip off unless they are wanting to replace the sensor as well. I swapped to my Fore rails in about 20 minutes taking my time. I could walk you through it NO problem, and I do love my aftermarket rails!

If you want aftermarket, Lethal performance has a Fore kit for $300, support our vendors!

Damn, this blows. I have done installs that are much more difficult than this too. The shop owner was a dick about me wanting to take my car, as he said that the chances of having a fire were really high. I wish I could just call him tomorrow and cancel the order, as it is coming from Troy Michigan. I had a feeling that $550 was ridiculous. My car is currently at the shop. Seems as though I can't really do much at this point.

Thanks a lot for the help guys.

Also, on another note, which cams I am going to go with? I want to go with a cam that requires new springs and retainers so I can have the most gains possible. Do you guys think the Stage 3 Comp cams will be too much for a DD?

Why can't you stop it?? At a minimum, I would find out a break down of the $550 as I can't image the OEM rails being more than a couple hundred. Either way, I would stop the repair order and take it home as you can get a kick ass pair of aftermarket rails with money left over for that price.

This is exactly why many people do not trust most shops/mechanics!

As a point of reference, looks like the list price for the fuel rails from Ford is ~$340, which might explain that cost estimate. And not to throw "fuel" on the fire here (no pun intended), they can be purchased for about 1/2 that from Tousley Ford

Thanks for the help. Do you think it is unreasonable to just tell him no and ask for my car back? The part is already on its way. Will he get screwed if he said the repair was canceled?

Your the customer, if it would make you feel better call Ford and get a price on a set of fuel rails. I can bet its going to be no where near that price. Don't feel obligated to pay someone when your not getting a fair price.
