Hi everyone, im new here and was looking to get some advise from people who know mustangs. i have always worked with jeeps and im not used to the fine tunning that goes into a car like this.
My girlfriend just bought a Ford Racing tuner intake for her 2008 GT and this part needs (calibration). Iv been lead to be leave by others that this is just a fancy word for a (tune). Could someone explaine how all this works. i also need to know how dangerous it really is the drive the car after install with out a tune. she is not doing this but i would like to install it my self and drive it to a tuner rather than to pay them to do it.

Install it and drive to the tuner. Drive modestly and you'll be fine. An intake replacement is not too wild, not to much too worry about running lean and poping a rod through the block.

The primary reason for the tune is the MAF sensor's sensitivity. It cannot get accurate readings when put in larger diameter tubing (which almost every aftermarket intake has). So, without the tune to adjust the values, the engine will be getting more air then the sensor thinks.
The secondary reason is that the factory tune actually runs the engine on the leaner side of the air/fuel ration scale (still safe, but saves fuel). Swapping to any of the high flow intakes, without reflashing the EEC, will result in a very lean condition. There is a very high risk of causing engine damage. Lean mixtures can cause excessive heat buildup, engine misfires and detonation.
I would recommend ordering the SCT or Diablosport tuners. Each has the Steeda/FRPP CAI tune already programmed into it.
+1 on running lean and dangerous if you run a tune-required CAI w/o a tune.
Check out the Bama and Brenspeed websites for good info on their tuners. Both are the most popular tune vensors on the forum and write excellent tunes, much better than the canned AmericanMuscle, Diablo, SCT, etc tunes.
I am thinking of getting the ford intake with the ford tune. It is suppossed to improve horsepower, but how are you guys doing with gas milage once you change to a CAI?

You obviously haven't read thru the forum's threads after doing your search...
The FRPP tune, IMPO, sucks compared to the GOOD custom tunes available. Look at the Brenspeed and Bama websites.
Did you buy a Stang to get good gas mileage or for performance? Even IF a CAI & tune improved mileage, it would probably take years just to break even (I can buy a lot of gas for the $650 or so a good combo costs). Most people here claim about the same to 1 MPG less but there's good likelyhood that's from the lead foot that accompanies most tunes (most GOOD tunes, that is). A few claim that the combo improved their mileage. I don't buy it. If you're worried about gas mileage, you can get a nice 10-speed bike for much less. The rest of us have given up our Happy Meals and Starbucks coffee for gas money.

So are you saying that i should just buy a new tuner from Bama or Brenspeed rather than bring it somewhere to be tuned?

I'd say buy the tuner from Bama or Brenspeed, loaded with 3 of their custom tunes. Unless you're racing where every single RWHP counts, a Bama or Brenspeed tune will most likely get you within 5-10 RWHP on a NA'd car of a half decent dyno tune.

Yes, buy the tuner from either of them. They are great tunes and it is easy to install. . You can always get a custom tune later by a dyno shop, but it usually isn't worthwhile unless you have significant mods.
