Default Camshaft Info

I'm looking at Brenspeed's site, and I'm getting the itch to go for the next engine upgrade that'll put a bit of HP down, but I have a few questions first.

Camshafts...

So far, I've been looking at just the Comp-manufactured sets. I understand that their basic sets are the NSR, VSR, and SPR, and that each set includes more parts and labor as you get up there, so let me tell you what I'm standing at.

I'm still N/A right now, but I'm looking to go Whipple in the future. I also love the sound/lope of the cam, but I don't want it to be too loud and irritating. My car is a DD, and my buddy has a DD as well with the FRPP Hot Rods in it, and everytime he pulls up to a stoplight, the ricers around here hear the extremely loud loping and try to race him. I want to avoid that, but keep a slight lope that I can deal with on 3 hour drives.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

The XFI cams from comp are less lopey and offer more power than the hot rods or thumper cams. The more extreme you go, the more low end torque you loose, that's why they recomend gears. You can definately get more out of the VSR and SPR cams, but it comes with not only a higher price but a bigger loss of low end torque. Unless you are going to be swapping heads, I don't see much need to go beyond the NSR stage II cams for a daily driver. Thinking down the road, you can use a N/A cam with a blower and it will be less than ideal, but perfectly functional, or you can use a blower gind without the F/I and it will be less than ideal, but ferfectly functional.

A lot of people swear by the Comp Cams NSR (the ones on Brenspeed's site). They give you 25-30 HP and don't need a tune. The idle is only very slightly different than stock. You can tell it's not stock cams but it's no where near as obvious as Hot Rods, Thumprs, or SPRs.

For all out power (and a nice lope too) the SPRs are it. But they will cost you the most as you not only need phaser limiters but new valve springs and retainers too. The Stage 3 SPRs sound WICKED. They're the best sounding cam for the 3v I've ever heard.

Also, you'll have the best drive-ability with the Comp Cams NSR. It'll be close to stock drive-ability where-as most (all?) others will/may give issues when going slow (like in traffic).

All good recommendations but what they fail to mention is you MUST, choose the cams that will be best for the style blower you plan to add later.

It's looking more and more like the nsr is what I want. Will it have a negative effect when I whipple it up? My gt came with 3.55 gears so I dunno how much it'll be affected over the 3.3s. As far as sound goes, I want it known that I have cams, but it needs to be daily driven and not get annoying on long trips. How do cams affect mpg?

A friend of mine installed the NSR cames not long ago partly because they said "no tune required" but shortly after his install we went to a test and tune event and he lost about 1/2 sec and his car ran a little crappy. He re-tuned at the track with a hand held and nothing helped so he was going to the local Dyno and get tuned but I haven't talked to him shice then.

I know Comp advetises no tune required but I find it hard to believe you wouldn't need a good Dyno update, but that's just my opinion.

I am going for the FRPP cams myself...

From what you are saying you want, the Comp XFI NSR Stage 2 cams are perfect. They will give you a slight lopey idle, and will give you some decent power gains. I went to Brenspeed and had them installed with Pypes LT headers with hi-flow catted H pipe. The sound is very nice, and is not over powering. Unless i go WOT and then the car just screams. They also did a Dyno tune. I will be honest tho, i was a little disappointed with my Dyno numbers. The car put down 310 rwhp, and 300 trq. That was with FRPP CAI with Steeda high flow elbow, the NSR cams and LT headers. Brenspeed did say that i could possibly see about 10-15 more rwhp if i didnt have the heavy ass 20s. As far as the changing gears goes, i did not and i also have the 3.55s. But after looking at the dyno graph while at Brenspeed, and talking to some of the guys there, I can tell you that i will DEFINITELY be going with 4.10s. The 4.10s will help me get the most out of the increased horsepower in the upper rpm range, to also make up for what little low end torque that was lost, and to try to compensate for the 20s. Even tho i was slightly disappointed with my RWHP numbers, i am still VERY happy with the results. And would still recommend them.

Since it's a dd with abit of highway between family I'm trying to stay in a decent mpg range which is why 4.10s aren't in. I may upgrade to 3.73s down the road though. How's your daily driveability and hwy/city mpg after nsrs? Any sound clip?

My car is my DD and the every day drive ability hasnt changed. That is one reason i went with these cams. Plus if i was going to replace springs, retainers and put on phaser limiters, for the Comp XFI SPR Stage 3 cams (which i really really would like to do) i would buy some ported and polished heads to take full advantage of them. Once the time comes for me to build a forged motor for F/I, i may do some custom ground cams, based on the stage 3s for my built motor, but that will be at least 3-4 years from now. Anyways my gas mileage has went down since i got back, but most of that is because i cant keep my foot out of it. Because i LOVE how the car sounds and performs. On the 450 mile trip back from Brenspeed i averaged 24 mpg, and on the way up i was getting just a shade over 25 mpg. Oh and those mpg were with the cruise set at 75-80 mph. I do expect to lose at least 2-3 mpg by going with 4.10s but i only drive 30 miles a day, and i've always been told you have to pay to play. I dont have any sound clips, hopefully ill be able to get some videos made soon. I can get an idle clip pretty easily but im still trying to get one of my friends to help me with the driving clips. If i can remember i will try to get an idle clip, with some revs, taken when i get off work in an hour or so.
