I share your concerns with passing California Smog inspections is why I started with the FRPP Performance upgrade package (FRPP CAI, Mufflers, and Tuner) which has a CARB EO number. Even came with the sticker. That became my new "stock" baseline. To that I added a SCT X3 with a performance tune from Tillmanspeed. All I will have to do now before the check in a few more years or Dealer service visits is use the SCT to return to stock.

Well, I can tell you that for your basic smog check they will hook up to your OBDII port and they also do the sniffer, plus the visual, that's standard procedure. One thing to keep in mind is that you have to get it checked every 2 years, so make sure it's worth the time and trouble to change everything around every 2 years. One option you do have is you can always register your vehicle in the central valley where they have no smog checks. Last I heard, from Santa Barbara up to almost SF you are in the clear, no smog checks ever.
Only SOME northern counties don't require smog checks. Southern and Central are almost all required. 34 out of 58 require them almost all being in the northern most area.
The Steeda CAI is the only intake that brenspeed sells that comes with the C.A.R.B. sticker
Per my communication with Brenspeed you are correct. However, their tune is not CARB approved. What happens if you install a Steeda CAI and then revert back to the factory tune? Does the car pass smog or throw a bunch of codes?

Well I did say "Last I heard" which means I really don't keep up with it that much. I only worry about the regulations that apply to me. Thanks for updating me. Makes me happy to see that the rest of the state now has to go through the same BS I have been having to deals with for the past 20 years. It always bothered me that the lucky suckers in Santa Barbara didn't have to hassle with it. That's the socialist republic of California for ya. They screw with everybody sooner or later!
Stanged, by what I have seen others say, a CAI will not allow your car to run properly without a tune, so you would have to set the tune back to stock and reinstall your stock air box. If you don't mind the hassle, it is doable.

I just got an email back from Brenspeed saying that the tunes are not noticable to the computers that the smog people use.........they said as long as YOU dont tell them that it is tuned then it wont matter. The also said that you can get a emissions tune whick keeps the rear O2 sensors on so you will pass no questions asked!
You MUST have a C.A.R.B. sticker on the car under the hood on the rad support for ANY engine mod you make to the car. Believe it or not, this even includes under drive pulley mods. Forget asking for paperwork, that is a no go. You need to make sure the part (CAI, or ???) comes with a C.A.R.B. sticker AND that the sticker covers your year vehicle. If it is for 05 - 07 and you put the sticker on 08 - YOU FAIL.
Next, the check here includes a very thorough OBDII Scan. This includes a little known item called rate based monitoring. This is a system designed into the OBDII that actually monitors each peice of emissions equipment to make sure it runs X number of times for Y drive cycles. They use a numerator and denominator combo to click the RBM points up. If you are running a tune that shuts off anything (like rear O2's) than the RBM will not run for that component and when they download your OBDII, guess what? YOU FAIL.
You cannot simply change the tune back before you head to the station for the check either. Because the RBM is there no matter what tune you have. It is imbedded into the OBDII code.
So, if you are in CA, you better run a C.A.R.B. approved and certified part and have a sticker for any aftermarket engine / exhaust component and that sticker must apply to your year. You also must run a tune that does not turn anything off or change the timing of RBM or you will be on the bench in a hurry.

That is very interesting because a LOT of people on these Mustang forums are always discussing how to reset the tunes back to stock for various reasons. A lot of them are under the assumption that by setting it back to stock, and/or disconnecting the battery you can start with a clean slate and the car will relearn everything. You are saying this is incorrect. That is interesting.....Sparked an entirely new discussion there...
