What's the difference between the C & L plastic Racer CAI with a Tune and the C &L Aluminum street Legal CAI with the same tune. Any downsides to the cheap plastic "Racer" Version with the Predator same tune. I understand you use the aluminum Street Legal Version aluminum with no tune.
I'm looking for any unseen downsides to the cheaper plastic "Racer" version of the C & L CAI.
Thanx,
Mr. D

The C&L Street may or may not need a tune depending on whether or not you use an insert inside of it. It comes with an insert you can use to narrow the opening to the air filter. The insert doesn't require a tune. Remove the insert, and more air flows, and then you need a tune.

Thanks! I understand that difference, but are there any downsides to the cheaper black Plastic C & L "Racer" version compared to the aluminum version when you are using a tune in terms of passing Calif. smog checks down the road or how they just hold up? Does anyone know if the "Racer" version will pass California Smog checks since you cannot put the insert in it?
The "Racer Kit" has a bigger MAF housing so it allows more air flow. Thus you need a tune so the computer can adjust the air fuel ratio. I have the "Racer Kit" and from everything I have read you really don't get everything out of it that you could unless you port your heads and install headers.

Here's the list of CARB approved modifications. If it's on the list you can use it in California.

On a side note, there is nothing illegal about using the Racer cai. Racer and Street are just the names they gave them.

What do you base that on? I've been told the "Racer" CAI is not street legal and is not on the approved list. My understanding is that the Street Legal version has been tested and approved 50 state legal while the Racer is not. Am I wrong in that opinion?
The "Street" has an 83mm diameter and the "Racer" has a 95mm diameter. The "Street" comes with a cast aluminum inlet tube while the "Racer" has a plastic inlet tube, which explains why the Street costs a tad more than the Racer. However, plastic=light weight.
