Default 180 Degree Thermostat

I am trying to decide if a 180 degree Thermostat is worth it. I do not have a charger or anything like that but I am in Louisiana and it is real hot so I thought it might be worth it. I even thought about getting a 160 degree, but I have heard that might be TO low. Also, when I had my car dynoed it looked like the knock sensor kept kicking in, would the thermostat help with that? Or maybe colder plugs? Or is it a tune issue only? Thanks for the inputs.

I'm pretty sure the stock thermostat is 180 degrees.

Thx,

Mike

OK. I am an a**....LOL In that case would a 160 degree Thermostat help any, or colder plugs, or is the knock sensor kicking in strictly a tune issue?

A 160° thermostat will cause you to throw codes and also not let you get into closed loop (control) mode on the computer. I would advise against that. I have read that here on this site.

Colder plugs might help, but I would get a cold air intake (CAI) and a good dyno tune with 93 octane gasoline before investing in colder plugs. The CAI and a good tune will pep up the car very nicely.

If you go the supercharger route, definitely get the colder plugs!

Hope this helps.

OK. So no to the thermostat. Sorry Mike I should have been more specific....I have a C&L CAI, UD Pulleys, and X-Pipe and 4:10 gears. And when I had the car dyno tuned that is when it looked like the knock sensor was kicking in. And my numbers kind of show me that. I only put down 291hp and 298ft.lbs. Granted I know that is not bad, but once I saw that it looked like the knok sensor kicked in a few times it got me wondering about the tune, and the heat.

If you are experiencing knock, then colder plugs would help.

Making sure your CAI is getting as cool of air as possible helps as well.

Get ready to pay about $90 for a set! They're about $10 each!

I'm using one gallon of pure Toluene mixed with a full tank of gas to raise my octane to 94.5 (when mixing with 93 pump gas). Toluene is a major component of gasoline used to make higher octane fuel so it won't hurt your car.

See this post for details:

https://mustangforums.com/m_1807706/...tm.htm#1816962

I let the gas tank get down to 1/4 or less, get to the gas pump, add the 1 gal of toluene, and then filler'up with 93 until I can't get anymore into the tank!

Hope this helps.

Ya lower temp tsats do nothing, they tend to make your motor hotter. See it all the time in boats, people buy the low temp tstat and then they come in saying they're overheating.

I do believe the stock thermostat is 192-195 degrees...I have always swapped out my stock thermostat for a 180...I live in Texas and it always helped...kept the car cooler but it still would get up to the correct operating tempature....this was done on all my FoxBodys...I haven't done anything yet to my 06...

I wouldn't recommend it. The S197 is much more tempermental than a fox.
