OK here is my problem and questions. I have a Big Daddy Performance CAI and after about 6 months I had a engine light come on, so I took it to the Ford Dealer and they got the light off, so when I asked what the problem was they said the only thing they could tell was it was running a little rich. I contacted BDP and was told their CAI's actually run a little lean because the stock MAF and Base fuel is targeted at 12.0... So my question is what do think can be the problem and how can I correct it ? Would going to a 62TB help or different plugs help burn the fuel better ? Im kind of stumped. I dont want to do a tune because of warranty at this time. Thanks guys for your imput.

So you have a tuneless CAI? Ooookkk. Anyway what else was wrong with car? They don't just run rich or lean without something causing it, what exactly did ford say was problem??

I dont have anything else wrong w/ the car as far I as know. The BDP CAI has a larger MAF and Ford garage tried to blame it on that but according to BDP theirs run on the lean side. Ford got the light out and it hasnt came back on. I just dont know now if it is still running rich.
That doesn't make sense. A larger volume of air will cause you to run lean w/o a tune. Which brings up a comment: Even CAI's that claim to not require a tune are known to throw codes on quite a few S197's. And since a CAI w/o a tune is barely worth the effort (maybe 5 RWHP), I recommend getting a tune to go with that CAI or buy an entire CAI & tune combo (15-25+ RWHP).
The stock TB is just fine for ANY CAI as long as you're not aspirated.
Where in south central PA are you? I lived just outside of York from '90 to early '07.
I would see the CAI and get a C&L with a tuner and you'll be much happer. No you don't need a T/B. Your manifold is only 60mm so anything bigger then that is a waist.

Yes it doesnt make sense, Im wondering if it even is running rich. I read a lot of things on MF and see people talk about different power upgrades and I try to sort through what is truth and what is not, thats why I was asking about the TB, Im always try to learn what will work and what wont. Im leaning more and more to a tune, maybe sooner than I thought. Hey thanks Nuke.

travelers, I would sell the CAI I have but it cost so damn much I would really take a hit on it, now it does have right on it C&L so I was thinking maybe a tune with it. I will have to talk w/ some one about what the printout/numbers on the MAF is so they know what I have.
OK thanks for the TB answer, I didnt know. Now who would you see about a tune ?

Sorry Nuke missed your question, I live south of Chambersburg in Greencastle. I def know York been there quite a few times over the years, car shows and stuff.
Personally I think your best course of action would be to keep you present intake but absolutely get yourself to a good dyno/tuner and get a tune. If your BDP intake really does have a larger than stock MAF housing and you are still running the stock Ford tune you are just asking for trouble. The power/performance gains come from the tune, not the intake by itself. Get yourself a good 93 octane dynotune and I bet you'll pick up 20-30 RWHP and your code-throwing issue will cease.

Looks like I'll be heading to Booze Brothers Racing to get a good tune . They are only a couple of miles up the road. Thanks for your input 300GT it helps me out
