Default How does an exhaust leak sound like?

Finally, after almost a month of waiting for an opportunity, I had a muffler shop install a set of American Racing 1 3/4" LT headers with catted x-pipe. Drove around HALF A DAY with the SLP Loudmouths and immediately went digging into my garage to find and reinstall the stock mufflers. The LM's were annoyingly bad sounding, especially with my auto trans.

The thing is, now that I have the stockers back in, I'm noticing a strange sound when accelerating. It sounds like a whooshing rush of air coming from underneath the car. Could it be a leak? Maybe it's the CAI sucking in EVEN more air now that the car is freer flowing?

How does a leak sound like? Is it a ticking sound? A constant whistle?

The instant you stab the throttle hard, you may hear a slurp for a split second and that's the CAI. Anything else is not the CAI.

I myself am still trying to decide if I have an exhaust leak or if my strange 2200-2400 rpm noise is just trumpeting. Acceleration doesn't matter. In that rpm band, I get a rattling/trumpeting like sound. And everybody says Bassani stuff doesn't trumpet. Hmm...

The X-pipes seem to put out more residual noise..

Well, either I have a leak too or they are wrong because my Bassani x trumpets as well.

Leaks will appear as black carbon deposits after a while.
Thats how I found my leaks on my new stang and got em fixed.
If you plug up the mufflers at idle, you can kill the muffler sound long
enough to help find the leaks (and pop a few valve stem seals if you are not careful).
A piece of paper placed directly in front of the muffler tips will sometimes show that
a leak is present by the way the paper acts at idle.

i have the exact problem as you. I have LTs with of road H pipe and i hear a whooshing sound everytime i step on the gas. I am going to have it checked out as soon as a have time. I am hoping it is just a leak.

Most exhaust leaks I've ever heard have a pretty distinct hissing/tick sound.

I rephrased this question in the general forum and it seems the sound I'm hearing from my exhaust is normal. Guess I'll just have to get used to it.

Thanks for the replies.
