Default Need Advice (tranny trouble)

I own a 2006 GT 5spd, 12k miles. I was driving it today in 1st gear, I pull out to try to shift to 2nd but I couldn't. It felt as if something was blocking me. I couldn't get into any other gear so I pull into the center lane and park. I press the clutch and run through all the gears, everything is smooth but 2nd. It takes a bit of effort to get into it. I start up the car and try to get into 1st, and can't. I try to cycle through gears with the clutch down and it feels like something is blocking me. I am a complete car newb, and don't really know whats up. I'm not covered by a warranty. I called the dealership to get some guidance while I was in the center lane and they said it might be binding(?).

So I decide to put it into 1st and try to start it, it felt a bit sluggish, like it might have been struggling. I gave it a bit of gas and she was running, I couldn't shift out of 1st. I decided to drive about 2 miles home, at a very low speed. I hope this didn't damage anything. If anyone has any tips, I would appreciated. Im going to try and find a mechanic asap tomorrow morning. I would mostly like to get a general idea of whats wrong or if I can at least troubleshoot. I hope this is the right board, if not I apologize. thanks

possibly the slave cylinder has failed, or is
getting bound up and is not moving freely.

the mechanic you take it to will know right
away what's going on. i believe the repair
will involve pulling the transmission.

yeah i have to agree with hammeron, if it is every gear and not just one individual gear that is difficult to shift, then has something to do with the throw out bearing/slave cylinder.

Thanks for the replies. Do you think I am looking at a pricey repair?

Depends on where you take it, i had to have my transmission worked on (thank god it was still under warranty) the price was about 1800, but the dealership pretty much rebuilt the whole transmission. I would say if it is just the TOB/slave cylinder that it shouldnt be too expensive. The best advise i can give is take it to a shop that you trust, and have them look at to make sure it is just the TOB and nothing more serious.

trouble is to change the TOB, gotta drop the tranny, while the part is fairly cheap (135-150 from the dealer IIRC) there is a fair amount of labor 3-4 hours from memory.

thanks for the advice, i had a neighbor(mechanic) look at it and he thinks its either the master/slave cylinder. he quoted me 190 if i provide the part. i tried to confirm where the problem is by lifting the car and following the fluid line to the tranny, i found it but the space was too tight for me to check it for pressure. hes coming back this evening and taking a closer look, hopefully we isolate the problem and get her back in shape asap. this has been a small learning experience for me, as for other estimates its been in the 200-300 range just to replace the slave cylinder. so im really hoping there isnt any major tranny work needed.i should ease up on the car and stop driving like a jackass.

update: we lifted the car and checked the line for pressure, it seems to be working properly. hes returning on monday and taking out the tranny and isolate the parts i need. basically im going to be looking at a new clutch kit, any recommendations or tips?
