Ford engineers specify Mercon V rated fluid be used in your transmission. Checking the RP web site, I can find no such rating for this fluid, or any rating at all for that matter. Use any fluid you want, but just be sure it has the Ford recommended Mercon V performance rating, or damage could occur.
I've heard both praise and badgering for the RP products. Without researching RP, I'd be hesitant to use it although I'm pretty sure some of their products are acceptable. I can't seem to find any reasons not to use Amsoil and, as a preferred customer, the Amsoil prices aren't that much more expensive than what M1 costs. No sense taking chances and going outside the comfort zone where our Stang's health and welfare is concerned.

I've been running it for about a year now. Had the same concerns you do before using it. The most noticeable thing since changing it is how much cooler the the shifter is. Since the lever on my Hurst is getting radiated heat from the tranny I can only deduce that it is running cooler.
BTW Tremec recommends dexron 3 ATF.

I'v heard a lot of people say that Tremec has recommended different products. I was told to use Syncromesh by Penzoil. I think the manual calls for the dexron 3 atf though. Makes you wonder....

Before I switched my fluid out I emailed Tremec. At the time my concern was with the 3rd gear grinding when cold. I had noticed that they (Tremec) recommended dexron 3 and that Ford called out Mercon V. I asked them if the friction modifiers in Mercon V could be causing the syncros to slip some when it was cold out, in turn causing the well documented 3rd gear grind. They told me that they ship the trannys to Ford already filled with a non-Ford fluid (can't remember if it was dexron 3 or Mobil) which debunked my theory.
