Default New gears strange noise

'06 GT, automatic.
Had 4.10's put in a week and a half ago, that weekend we put LCA's and relocation brackets on. Last week on just a couple of right hand corners I could hear a strange...'woosh...woosh...woosh' sound, about 1/2 a second apart while turning normal speed into a parking lot.

Accelerating and decelerating everything seems fine. City and highway (80) driving seems fine. Today coming home from work I listened close on both left and right turns and only heard it once on a right hand turn. Long tube headers and GTA's don't help much!!

Don't know what to compare the noise to, maybe close the sound of a bent bicycle rim rubbing the bike frame (30 years ago!).

Has me worried. I work from 4am to 4pm, so trying to get it back to the shop that did the install will be a real pain. Any thoughts on what it might be? Any suggestions to try and diagnose??

Thanks!!

When you did your gears did you add a bottle of friction modifier?

That's why I asked about the friction modifier. Without the FM, you CAN get a noise when turning. Some brands of gear lube say you don't need to add FM, but you do. I had a similar problem years ago. I put in Red Line gear lube and started getting a funny noise while turning. I went ahead and put in a bottle of Ford FM and no more noise.

I supplied the gears (Ford), bearing kit (Motive), and lube (Royal Purple). I thought with Royal Purple you didn't need friction modifier, but I do recall a post or two somewhere that someone did recommend it. I'll call the shop tomorrow and see if by chance they added it, but since I supplied everything...kinda doubt it.

Appreciate the thoughts. So with it being Royal Purple...any reason not to add FM if it wasn't already put in??

Thanks!

With Royal Purple Gear oil you DO need Friction Modifier.

Not necessarily true. Here's a quote right off Royal Purple's website.

Max-Gear® is an ultra-tough, high performance, GL-5 automotive gear oil designed to provide maximum protection to heavily loaded gears while maximizing power output throughout the drive train. It outperforms other GL-5 gear oils because it combines the highest quality synthetic oils with Royal Purple's proprietary Synslide® additive technology.

Max-Gear® makes gears run smoother, quieter, cooler and longer without overhauls.

Note: All viscosities of Max-Gear® are formulated with hypoid friction modifiers necessary for use in clutch or cone type differentials. No additional additives are necessary.

This is the gear oil I used when I changed my gears. I have zero noise coming from mine.

I had the same issue soon after my gears were installed. The installer added more friction modifier and that solved the problem.

Does the noise sound like a creeking noise, of any type when turning, or hitting a bump?
If so, I would bet my money that it is the bushing on the LCA.

Now, if the gears were not properly set-up, you didn't use FM, etc. you will hear a whining type noise.

Default Start small

I had a similar problem when I had my gears and LCA's put on. Naturally I thought it was the gears so I drove 6 hrs back to the shop that did the install to find out it wasn't the gears at all!

Check the bracket that holds your mufflers to the frame, it's possible the slight change in vehicle position is causing the bracket to rub on the frame under certain flexing conditions (turning). This is what my car was doing, they ground off some of the metal on the bracket and that was the last time I heard the sound.
