Default RPM needle issue's

Has anyone ever had problems with their RPM needles stuck at the wrong RPM position ? I have a 2005 mustang GT with only 40k on the clock. I was driving last night and the needle went total F##king haywire and was up side down revving clock wise. Eventually I found out when I shut the car off it would go back a little bit, so it took me 8 times of shutting the car off to get the needle back towards 0 when off. Now it will either sit anywhere between 500 under 0 - 700 when off, At idle it will sit between 0 - 900 RPM's. It sucks because I do not want to go over the redline due to incorrect readings then grenade my engine. Is there any TSB's ? I could not find anything on this, any help will be appreciated.

The rev limiter shoudl still work so you shouldnt have to worry about over revving. As for the cause, I had a similar issue with my 10, but it was all the guages. The guages woudl jsut start reading wrong, tach woudl stick, then things woudl randomly just work correctly again. Teh issue was some sort of sensor for the speedo on the transmission. Repalced it and its been fine since.

There's an issue with the stepper motors in the earlier gauge clusters. My speedo hasn't worked for 2 years and my coolant gauge doesn't work when the car has been sitting in the heat for a while. You can either try to replace the stepper motors which is a bit of a project or you can get a new gauge cluster.

Thanks for the info , Ye I think it is the stepper motor dysan. I have a warranty with the dealership I got it from so hopefully they replace it.

Any news on what this was and if it was the stepper motor? My GT is now doing the same thing, but the warranty has expired by now. I'm trying to figure out my options. Thanks.
