Default Ported heads / who is best

Well I figured that stage 3 ported heads would be the best to go with. Who in your opinions would be the best of the best? Please include prices if you know them.

There is no best! They're all the same. FRPP, Livernois and BBR all flow between 292-295 cfm at 0.600 lift. The advantage to FRPP is they're new castings vs the other guys port used sets but the FRPP are very expensive so price wise Livernois has the advantage.

None of them if you aren't going to go big and build the rest of the motor. The stock 3v heads flow just fine for what the stock block can handle. The low end torque loss is not worth the top end gains for a daily driver. If you're funning F/I, you can get to the breaking point of the stock internals just fine without heads.

Here's Livernois' 3v heads on a built N/A motor:

Original 281c.i. 4.6L engine:
•315/325

323ci 5.3L Aluminum Big Bore Stroker
•426/394

I think Fox Lake would do it both heads for around $1500 if I remember correctly. I would want a cam to match the head if I spent the money on though.

Last time I checked we are all running used castings. No problem so far.

Depends on the application/combination and what you want to spend.

If you have a .500 lift cam the heads with big .600 lift numbers may not be as good for that application.

Big flow numbers are arguably not as important as ones that have more average flow across the valve lift range. For example from the numbers I have been able to find the Livernois Stage III heads have the highest average flow up to .500 lift (not a lot of people go with a bigger cam than that).

Then there is a place like Total Engine Airflow which will hand finish their CNC heads and they have a fantastic intake to exhaust flow ratio. They would be great heads for a FI motor. The problem is they are expensive and they don’t answer the phone.

Heads are a lot like cams. You need to clearly define your goals and then choose accordingly.

I had my heads done by TEA. I think they did the pair for $1799. There is no doubt that they are excellent quallity.........but my car was down for nearly three months while I waited for them to be machined. Good thing it isn't my only means of transport.

Well I have the shortblock sitting at my brother's (mechanics) house. I want to get a nice set of p/p heads before I deploy just to make things a little easier on him. I have to stick with stock cams because of California's smog laws (DAMN IT)
The rest of the list will be bought while I am gone and whenver I can get to a computer

Well you definitely want a set of heads with good average airflow then. A set of “hogged out” heads that work great at .600 lift are going to do you no good at all. The stock cams only have .432/.435 lift.

I’d go with the Livernois ones. They also have the added benefit of having the new spark plug design.
