If you are used to driving a manual get one. If not, I would follow your folk's advice and get an automatic. The reason I recommend that is because if you are not used to driving a manual, you can kill a clutch fast. That leads to money going to the clutch instead of some other goody. There is absolutely no shame what soever in driving an automatic. They sell an awful lot of them. What have you got your eye on??

Learning a stick takes a little practice but after awhile it becomes second nature. I vote for the manual UNLESS you'll be driving in a lot of stop-and-go traffic. After awhile, that gets really mundane.
And I'm sure this will evoke a lot of flaming.... Here, let me start:

It only took me a hour or two in a parking lot with a hill to learn how to drive stick. Sure I stalled out a few times after that but now I can do it without think about it. Btw that was 6 months ago.
I say get the manual. It's a good thing to know how to do and it also forces you to pay attention to traffic alittle bit more.
What is your first car going to be?

Growing up in my family, we weren't allowed to drive anything until we learned how to drive stick. My dad firmly believed that driving stick taught better control and familiarity with the vehicle. If manuals aren't completely phased out by the time my son is of driving age, he will learn the same way.
