Engine Noise - Hydraulic Lifter failing??

My sons engine has a tapping noise. In my youth days, we used to call that "lifter tapping". I am being told his 2005 Mustand GT has hydraulic lifter problem. Just want to know before I take to a mechanic. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

Give us some details. When does the noise happen? I'm assuming it happens at idle and dissipates as rpm are increased? What has been done to the motor? How many miles?
