New '08 Mustang GT Owner- Initial Mods
Just today I purchased my first Mustang and am now interested in adding some good "starter" modifications. Can anyone tell me some good mods to begin with that won't break the bank, yet increase horsepower and make it sound mean?
The finance manager at the dealership was the proud owner of a Shelby GT 500 and gave me some good pointers, but told me to jump on this forum to get solid advice. He recommended that I begin by getting a cold air intake and Hurst short throw shifter. He also recommended that I get some kind of programmer to aid in the increase of horsepower. Lastly, he mentioned getting a better exhaust system (I believe he said Steeda was really good).
If anyone can point me in the right direction of where to begin with mods, I would be most appreciative. Thanks in advance for any advice that you can provide to me.

By far, I think the first upgrades should be Tuner/Cold air intake/x-pipe. I mention them as a group because you need the tuner to adjust the air fuel ratio with the cold air intake, and you also need the tuner to turn off the rear O2 sensors with the off road x-pipe. These three mods are well over 30 hp, closer to 40hp, and they bolt on very easily! Here's what I used:
UPR/SCT Tuner & CAI combo: http://www.uprproducts.com/mustang-b...sct-tuner.html
UPR x-pipe: http://www.uprproducts.com/mustang-o...x-pipe-05.html
Here's what it sounds like: http://youtu.be/qUz3IhQ1fF8
I replaced the shifter while I had my car on the lift for the x-pipe, because you have to get under the car to remove and replace the shifter. I also used the UPR billet shifter: http://www.uprproducts.com/mustang-b...-05-trick.html
Control arms add traction, eliminate the wheel hop, and make the car feel more solid: http://www.uprproducts.com/mustang-c...ackage-05.html
Lowering springs radically improve the handling of the car: http://www.uprproducts.com/mustang-e...prings-05.html
When you lower the car, it shifts the axle over to the driver's side and you need an adjustable panhard bar to re-center it: http://www.uprproducts.com/mustang-p...rd-bar-05.html

There are a few ideas to get you started. I did all of these mods, with a set of GT500 wheels & Nitto NT05s in 275/40-18 and it made a huge improvement on my car. It's a lot of fun to drive!
