Single Engine Bay Mounted Turbo Pipe Clearance Question
Hi Guys
I have been considering a single engine bay mounted torbo system if I decide to go F/I. The pictures show the tubing going down and around the K member and I wonder if they play wack-a-mole with the road potholes and such. Real life feedback would be great! I just can't imagine those pipes hitting stuff would have a good outcome.

The pipes on my kit only run under the K right inside of the front wheels. THis way it is almost impossible for them to hit. THe only scrapping I have ever done was where they Y-pipe attaches to the over the axle pipes. I have since adjust the pipes a little for more clearance and don't really ever have to worry about it anymore.

I'm much happier with the KB. If I had a built auto tranny, I may have stayed with a turbo.

Bought turbo system from Powerhouse. Zero clearance issues. Started with 67mm, then upgraded to a 76mm for dragracing.
Did swap the stock 5 speed manual for a 4r70w with transbrake (rated for 1000+ hp). Car is no longer street-legal and have moved from the 4r to a 2 speed GM powerglide.
As far as tuning the turbo, without an expert tuner available and intimately involved with the build, would not have the 76mm pushing 20+ lbs boost. Car did not race without tuner at the strip for datalogging after each run and making adjustments.

I am leaning hard toward a turbo setup. The superchargers just don't do anything for me. 650HP is the most I would ever go in a car and suspect with 8 pounds boost I would be a happy camper. The turbo system's seem to have come a long way, but it is hard to get good feedback...the SC trolls bash em non-stop.

Check out this thread...There are a lot of useful pics and info in here for various turbo setups for the S197 platform. You will also find better info over there!

A turbo will make more power/lbs of boost and require less fuel system to do so also. Easier and faster to change boost levels and will give you the high hard tq of a pd blower without the ill effects of high IATs.

Here is a very nice turbo kit that will come with almost everything that you need minus a tune. THe base turbo is also a very nice turbo!
