Hey everybody, I have been a Mustang enthusiast for a long time and have owned five of them. I just recently bought a 06' GT with a 5-speed... A lot different than the fox body's that I am used to! I went to take it for the first real drive, and it spun off the line pretty good (not the problem), it caught at around 3000 RPMs, but then once I shifted into second to run through the gear, the car went completely sideways... I can ride through more than a chirp or a little spin, but I almost lost it when the car went from straight to 90 degrees sideways. It is stock (flowmaster exhaust) with 17K miles and brand new Pirelli PZero tires on it. I didnt put those on because I would have gone bigger than 235/55/17. So, what can I do to get rid of this absurd slip when I hit second gear? It has the stock 17x8 Bullitt wheels, and after research some say I can wrap a 275 tire around it, while others say that 255 is the biggest. I will buy the tires, but 255 isnt too big of a jump from 235's. Will tires alone fix these cars traction problems? My 90' Supercharged LX (11.90) doesnt worry me like this car. Please help!?!? Day and night difference. I made the same change on my '06 GT and it was a big deal.
I strongly recommend upgrading to 18x9 or 18x10 rear wheels if/when possible. That will open up your tire choices quite a bit. Seeing that you've got an 11 second Fox, you almost sound like the type that needs 18x10s with like a 295/45-18 or something similar. You'd love the grip!

Did this happen on a straight run? I have 06 GT convertible, manual, with stock 235-50-18 tires, BFGoodrich... Never had issues with spinning the wheels except for hard gear changes on WOT from 1 to 2... Going sideways? Only in a rain may be... My new General tires stay glued to the pavement on hard gear changes, prob. softer rubber... What you describe sounds very disturbing to me...

Overstatement, unless you are driving on a road that is slippery this kind of thing just does not happen. I've launched my 05 on the track and the street, and beyond some very controllable wheel spin I have never gone sideways as OP described.

You're right about improving with control arms and sticky tires, but I disagree about tire spin never entirely going away. A good suspension & tire setup will make a car hook. It all depends on what a person wants...

My 2011 stays straight, or nearly straight even when spinning through 2nd during a massive burnout
mabe his LSD is having issues?
