Default is 15w 50 weight oil too heavy?

Mobil 1 makes a race proven, high zinc oil. It comes in 15w 50 but our gt's call for 5w 20 so will that do more harm than good?

I wouldn't use that thick of an oil, especially not up North. If you were doing track days in the dead of summer, then maybe.

I posted a link to the high zinc 10w30 VR1 full synthetic, no good? You could use Rotella t6 5w40. It's a full synthetic diesel oil and is high in zinc compared to regular auto oil. It will probably shear down to a 30 weight pretty quickly, so i wouldn't worry about the 40 part of the equation.

If you want a 5w30 or 10w30 full syn with high zinc/phos, then you are going to pay good money for it.

Amazon Amazon

redline 5w30 is very high in zinc, but expensive. I might change my oil with this before going to the track next year. Just for a little extra protection.

If you want to know how much zinc or anything, an oil has in it, just google the oil name weight plus VOA. That's virgin oil analysis. Somebody has sent an unused sample to a lab at some point in time.

rotella T6 VOA. 1200 ppm of zinc. The VOA's for redline 5w30 are around 1300 ppm of zinc. Anything over 1,000 is high ime. Most of todays EPA friendly oils are well below 800ppm of zinc.

Yeah the redline looks promising, I just didnt like that the vr1 wasnt synthetic and didnt have detergents. Does amsoil make a high zinc formula?

You only need the high zinc for flat tappet cam motors... waste of money in a roller motor like ours. Running Amsoil 0w 30 in mine with no problems.

Yes it will do more harm, all 4.6/5.4 and new 5.0's motors are tight tolerance. 5w20 is ideal weight.

zinc still helps the oil cling to engine parts to prevent wear so it doesnt hurt to have it

well synth doesnt break down like regular oil does so I think it will still be good haha even at high temperatures.

How is 0w-30 too thin and 15w-50 too heavy?? What would u use then? (the first number should always be lower because you want the oil to be thin at start up apparently from what I read on that bob the oil guy site)
