Question Amsoil

Our local Amsoil distributor wants to give me a deal on a oil change. Has anyone had any issues with using Amsoil?

Amsoil is a great product. I became a Preferred Buyer which is about $15 or $20 / year and it gets you much better pricing. I mail order direct from Amsoil and usually have in 3 days.

I used to use Amsoil 5W-20 ASM oil and ther Ea oil filter when I drove the Stang about 20,000 miles/year. I changed the oil every 10,000 miles; quite early for that oil and filter. Since I stopped putting that kind of mileage on my Stang (it's not my DD) I went to M1 and Pennzoil Ultra which I also use in my wifes '06 Pony and change the oil at 1 year intervals or 8,000 miles, whichever comes first. Same for my tow vehicle SUV. However, I still use the Ea filters on both Stangs. I also use Amsoil products for all of my yard equipment and my boat.

Amsoil is great stuff. I use, pretty sure, 0W-20 in my '05 GT with all of 65k on it. I use 10W-40 in my '04 Yamaha FJR. I'll suggest on top of that you look at tufoil.com for a very good additive. I've got about 15 > 20 years history with that. My last car was a BMW with their famous 2 liter 4 cylinder. I had the engine custom built at 132k by a BMW renown machinist and added some "tricks" to it. He recommended it. I sold that car with 269k after 28 sets of tires because I loved driving that thing so much in the mountains without slowing for curves and because it was a "four" it spent a lot of its life at 4k to 6k RPM's. In the mountains Id hold it at near 6k in third for extended amounts of time. Heck, just driving on the CA freeways at 75 > 80 meant it was running at 3.5k to 4.0k RPM's. You are not going to EVER give your Mustang that kind of exercise!

I stand corrected. I also used the Amsoil 0W-20, NOT 5W-20.

A repost from earlier regarding a facebooker who was bashing on Royal Purple and stating Amsoil was better. We wanted you to still have access to the information.

Let’s start with any synthetic motor oil that you choose will benefit you vehicle better than conventional motor oil whether you choose Royal Purple, Mobil 1, or Amsoil, but Royal Purple can offer you something a little more.

Amsoil doesn’t have any 3rd party independent studies done that show their product out performs ours and the ones they do claim are conducted by dealers or their own labs. Amsoil’s test are conducted under their supervision with their people running the test, but the lab sounds like an independent lab in the way it is presented. A key example of this is the 4 ball wear test.

The ASTM D4172 Test (4 ball wear test) is NOT an accepted engine oil test nor indicative of actual field wear performance for engine oils. Per the ASTM 'Significance of Use description", the ASTM declares that there is no correlation between oils of different formulas or to actual field wear data. This test was designed to quickly compare 'batch to batch' quality of the exact same formula of oil during production.

Amsoil also has a bad habit of claiming ASTM, API acceptance and/or test protocol and then modifying the test in-house. The ASTM D4172 should run at 1200 rpm and 75 C. Amsoil ran it at 1800 rpm and 150 C. At that point, it becomes an 'Amsoil' in-house test, not an ASTM repeatable test. Why did they modify the test? To make their oils 'look' better? Amsoil has taken this test and made it a big selling point and consumers have no idea what the test was intended for. Amsoil also has a bad habit of claiming ASTM or API acceptance or test protocol and then modifying the test in-house. They also do not run the ASTM Timken OK Load test - the RP oils would score first in this test having 300-400% better performance than the others.

Amsoil's typical miss-interpretation of results can even be found in their own reports. They test regarding film strength si not about film strength but is about wear.

They have even shown where Royal Purple has the highest rating for wear protection in the FZG test and highest rating for oxidation protection, but yet they score Royal Purple the worst in a 'wear test'. Why, How? Amsoil will not report on Royal Purple’s Oxidation resistance in a TFOUT test. WHY, because Royal Purple will actual tests out to 1300 minutes and is 2 ½ times better than theirs! They arbitrarily stopped the test at 500 minutes. We also had some of the best results in the cleanliness results for keeping your engine free of deposits and corrosion and zero foaming yet they claim we failed a rust protection test? Confusing - hard to judge as they do not share the actual coupon of the metal - just report a failure and they also will not state how many coupons they ran with each oil - or did they run the test until they got a 'failing' one and reported it?

Why does Amsoil have it out for Royal Purple? How Could someone mess up these results? EASY, at the end of all of the studies you will usually one or both of the following names

Dave Leitten- AMSOIL Laboratory Director and Kevin Dinwiddie - AMSOIL Drivetrain Specialist

They work for Amsoil and every test run and distributed that Amsoil was ranked number 1 is done internally. It does appear there was no favoritism to their company? Not really

Just thought we would clear some of the air.

We still refer back that Amsoil makes a great product, but Royal Purple can and does things better and different than they do.

Have a nice day.

Default AMSOIL

I also believe AMSOIL is a great product. I used it for several years and had no issues. When Pennzoil introduced Pennzoil Ultra I decided to switch to that from the AMSOIL I had been using, not because I was unhappy with the AMSOIL, but because it was a little cheaper and I can get it at Wally World. From what I read, Ultra is a fantastic product and I don't have to mail order it. I also think the Ea filters are probably one of the very best on the market, but since I change my oil every 5K miles, I just use Purolator Pure One filters and am satisfied with them. If I was going for extended oil changes, I would definitely use the Ea filters.

I was first a preferred customer as well and then became a amsoil vendor. After repeated samples sent to blackstone from customers and myself I have settled back to 5-30W for both my 2v and 3v mustangs in my region of the country. (high desert so cal) Amsoil makes a great product and I stand behind it wholeheartedly however if you are going to change your oil every 3-5K just go with motorcraft syn blend. Honestly in the tests I got back there was no substantial difference between top tier synthetics and the syn blend at that mileage for a daily driver. If you are going to be racing then totally different story and I would be using a full syn again. Their EA filters and bypass kits are excellent and do real wonders for vehicles that are older, carbed or not well maintained before you got them.

I have been using it in mine for 2 years now with no complaints. I also using it in the touareg. I might switch to pennzoil next year to save some cash. We use that in Nancys mustang and its pretty good stuff as well.

Talking Thanks

Thanks for the info guys. I'm old school, so will probably change oil every 3K to 5K miles, something that was engrained in me when I was growing up.
