Default 05 mustang gt temp. gauge needle in red?

I know someone has gone through this before, so any help before going to the dealership will be welcome. So I took a long highway drive today and when I was getting off the freeway going home I notice that the temp. Needle was slightly pass the center but not in the red. Got home still same spot, so I turn the car off but when I turn it back on the needle goes all the way to the red? There was no smoke or coolant smell, didn't notice any leaks, fan comes on when starting the car, coolant looks leveled, no check engine light, no temp. light, and info reset said coolant temp. O.K. (Just to note 2005 Mustang Gt-JLT CAI with 91 octane tune and BBK short headers with 85,000 miles.) thanks fellas for any info.

So been looking on the Internet on my problem with overheating gauge I believe it may be a faulty ignition coil, because lately I have been having a problem with the car acting like it might die when giving it some gas i thought it might be the fuel filter which I replaced but it was still doing it today before the needle went to red. Anybody think this could be my problem and how hard is it to replace the coils on these stang.

I'm just throwing this out there but since you said it doesn't seem to be overheating yet its indicating that it is it could be the stepper motor? These have been known to go out in the 05's and happed to me once but mine ended up being stuck past full. Even in the 05 I have now my coolant needle reaches the middle point at about 175 and never moves an inch even when my car got up to 230* and started over boiling. Personally I don't rely on the needle for accuracy. Hopefully your tuner can read coolant temps or just buy the torque app to see if it really is overheating.

As far as your hesitation I would start by checking with the ignition system and then possibly injectors. Coils are pretty simple and could be done yourself

Thanks Horylev I think you might be right when I turn on the ignition after it cooled off (engine cold to the touch) and the needle starts in the middle starts to go down to the red then goes right back to the middle. When I turn off and take out the key the needle stays in the middle and does not go down to the cold. Thanks for the info I still going to have to replace my plugs and coils how about a step motor that's in the gauge cluster right that shouldn't be to hard to replace right?

If you haven't changed the plugs yet, make sure you familiarize yourself with the spark plug tsb before changing them. And it might be a good idea to have the lisle tool on hand.

Thanks, I'll check that out I heard the plugs sometimes crack which makes it a PITA to get them out.

very simple to replace. there held on by 2 or 3 small pins soldered to the board. just be carefull not to slip or hold it too long and melt any other components of the board. cost me 25 i belive and i got all 6 motors to replace. now setting the needles back up correctly after was a little more tedious and did take some time and patience.

These 4 vids show how to replace stepper motors in the gauge cluster. The 1st 3 vids are a 3-part series. The 4th is a single vid. The stepper motors are available on eBay.

Thanks for the vids I was actually looking at YouTube videos. It seem simple enough to try and if I screw up I guess I'll just have to buy a new cluster. But I plan on putting in my own clusters as well on the window pillar.
