I'm having trouble shifting. not sure if it is shifter or trans. some times it won't go into first or fifth, grinds going into third, then next time shifts ok. any idea? only 26,000 miles on it

If it's an aftermarket shifter, maybe the gate spring is too stiff and it's not allowing the shifter to go all the way to the left or right.

If the clutch pedal feels inconsistent and spongy, there could indeed be air in the hydraulic system.

You probably need a different clutch. If it was air you should feel it in the clutch.

No, I think you only need to remove the shifter boot first to get access to the bolts for the shifter itself.
