Well, everyone has their own comfort level. I was not comfortable pushing the car to the theoretical edge, hence I'm hovering around ~400whp at a max of 8psi. There are plenty of people on here running over 450whp on an otherwise stock car that have had good luck. I agree about the high horsepower thing, the #s mean nothing if you can't put the power on the ground, and then you're just sitting at maximum risk with minimal reward.
The amount of money and installation costs involved with getting an N/A stang up to 360whp isn't logical to me personally, unless that is just specifically what you're after. If reliability is what you want, leave it bone stock IMO. Had I stayed N/A, I would have just stopped at the CAI/tune, and put in some gears and called it good. The fairly minimal gains yielded by the more complicated/expensive installs after that, don't make much sense to me. If I did the work myself, I guess some of that would be negated...

typical bolt ons + a set of p.p. heads and cams will net you around the 350rwhp range. I agree that the cost of doing this versus the cost of dropping a s.c. is around the same maybe more, but i like the idea of a fast n/a car.
how long have you had the s.c. set up on, and how do you like it Mudflap?

I've just had it on for about 2 weeks now. The car drives very nicely around town, you can't really tell its boosted except for the S/C noise. It drives like the car did with a CAI/Tune which makes sense, considering that is just about what it is when you're not in boost. The car is fairly quick even staying out of boost. If you give it more throttle it responds pretty quickly and builds boost all the way up to redline. It never runs out of steam, just RPMs. You can see on my dyno sheet in the signature, that the torque just builds steadily and never stops. It doesn't have insta-matic power like a twin screw, but then again I'm not sitting there spinning much either. I start spinning at about 35mph on stock rubber... With some sticky tires, this thing would be pretty formidable.
For $3799 from Brenspeed, the kit is pretty affordable for 400~ whp. If you can install it yourself, then its even more appealing price-wise. A fast N/A car is cool too, but for the money I just didn't want to go that route on the S197. I don't really feel the Vortech is posing a major risk to the car, or to reliability at these power levels. The torque is right on the edge of the rated levels for the gearbox, but there are guys running far more power who haven't had problems, so I am not expecting any issues with it.

installing the kit would not be an issue, but i have used the centrifugal blowers before and i do not like the fact that you do not see max boost until near red line. If i would go supercharger i would go kenne bell or wipple. Another thought would be a turbo, but the issue with turbos is the tunning. Since the power does not come on in a uniform matter like a blower the tuner tends to have a harder time tunning it and not running into hick ups.
non the less from the looks of your dyno sheet it seem you have a pretty nice fat power band.
I'd have gone Kenne Bell if I had done a twin screw. The Whipples are real nice, but their recent price hike took them out of the running for me. Its not that I wouldn't enjoy the instant boost/torque, but I didn't want to push the car that hard. I like the gradual delivery of the centri as I believe it is easier on the car in some ways, and also this base Vortech kit was right at/below the max power level I was comfortable with: 420rwhp and 380rwtq.

i personally refuse to get FI, i was an fbody guy sincei got my license and we use to bash on all the stangs that had to get SC or TC to keep up. So thats why i opted to stay NA, my cam and install cost $1300 thats including dyno as well
Whatever turns you on man. I've had a 2000 Z28 as well. And a stage 2 WRX, a NA 350Z, '06 turbo GTI with the DSG tranny, etc etc the list goes on. I'm not sure I'd NOT run F/I out of some weird pride though, lol. In the end its all about having fun. The new Nissan GT-R needs twin turbos to "keep up" as well, but that doesn't make that car any less badass IMO. Same with the old turbo Supras... You have some cool N/A mods, but you won't be able to approach the same #s a blown stang will for similar money. Different strokes for different folks. Enjoy your ride, thats all I say matters.

Post a dyno chart when you can.
I am now intrigued at comparing what dyno charts for modded N/A, twin screw, and centripetal engines look like.
