Default Timing Belt??

Bought a 1991 Mustang LX convertible with a 4 cylinder engine. Has about 70,000 miles on it. Not sure what 4 cylinder or even if they had different ones in 1991... seems everyone is talking about the 2.3 liter... the point is that I gave it to my grandson to use as transportation while he is going to college... Just received a call from him that it went "clank" once and stopped running... somewhere north of Columbia, SC.... Says it will not turn over. I am trying to diagnose the problem before I go get it and am wondering about the valve train in the Ford 4 cylinders... Is the valve train active or inactive?? That is to say, if you bust a timing chain/belt/gear, do the pistons go into the valves...? or not? Just curious... I am sure this has happened to someone out there... Thanks in advance. Rockfoot

FYI, if the car isn't turning over it's something bigger than a timing belt

I think Stinger has a write-up on the timing belt on his site somewhere.

Got the car home, replaced the timing belt... it also ate the Hall Effect Sensor... Runs good... Just line up the marks. A big hint to let you know that the Hall Effect Sensor is bad is that the "Check Engine" light does not go off while the engine is being cranked.... The drivers side window motor was bad... replaced that, too... piece of cake...
