88 stang lx 2.3 rough running
Starts fine, has rough idle. In gear it has very little power.
Has very little power from 500rpm-2500rpm, and almost no power from 3000 up.
Slow on accelleration....
I've been told catalytic converter. Is this possible?
Thanks

Hi,
The best way to check for a bad Cat. is to gently tap it with a rubber mallet and listen for any debris inside.
Have you checked for any codes? and when was the last time you did a tune up? Hows the fuel pressure?
I agree with the other poster too, check the timing too

Will do.
I actually drove it around the block today. Had it in 3rd gear, I put the pedal to the floor and it fell on its face. I went for a second attempt and gave it little by little and it seemed to take the gas better.
I put new plugs, wires, cap and rotor button on yesterday, along with an oil change.
I dont have a timing gun handy but i'm sure i can find one.
Thanks for the help fellas.

10 degrees advanced? isn't it 10 degrees retarded base timing, or is that jsut the turbo motor?
When you time it, be sure to take the spout connector out. But timing sounds like your issue. These motors can run completely *** backwards, just not well.

on these cars is it possible to do timing by spinning the distributor or am I going to have to pull the timing belt?
Also, What's a spout connector?
I'm a Camaro guy, i'm just now dipping my feet into ford waters....

there will be a line heading off of the distributer. There will be what looks to be a plug with a cap on it. Pull the cap. That disconnects the spout.
Just the start the car, let it idle, and you'll be fine.

Ok, I discovered a problem with the car. the #1 plug wire was tucked underneath the timing belt cover and got chewed pretty good by the cam gear. Mind you i just bought the car so "it wasn't me" applies here.
Will replace wires tomorrow, moved said arc'ing wire so that it wouldnt arc and she ran a little better. I got her to idle at about 1000rpm but below that she still sputters. She was originially idleing at about 1800rpm.
I took some pics of my dizzy, I'm still not 100% on what the spout we are talking about is, but i think i have an idea. It splices off the main connector to the dizzy and has what looks like a "t" cap stuffed in it?
As soon as I figure this forum out I'll post some high-def pics.
*EDIT*
Posted three pics:
# 1 is my dizzy with cap off
# 2 is my vacuum tree on the firewall, I wanted to see if everything there was ok
# 3 is of my motor bay before I fixed the plug wires, note where they are hiding [:@]
