Ok i have an 89 2.3t. I am using a center mount header with a 38mm JDM external wastegate(ya its a cheapie). I finally stopped ALL of my exhaust leakes before the turbo. For the damn life of me the turbo still wont spool. One thing about my wastegate is that the housing(which is a big ass blue one) spins(not while running but by hand and in both directions and also stops at one point. I've tried it in several positions with no luck). I dont know if this affects the position of the door, but i need to know something. The turbo is a t3/t4 with a 52 ar on the compressor side.
I might take it off in the next couple days to inspect it closer, but i am short on time and becoming disgruntled by this project that i'm sick of it and going to buy a 302 with wiring, computer and a bellhousing with flywheel. My buddy has convinced me i'll be so much happier since i want the power. I would like to run this car the way it was meant to be before i get rid of it. Thanks in advance.

How easy does turbo spin? Should be extrememly easy to spin. External wastegate is there any exhaust leak past the turbo. I assume seat is shut good. Have wastegate hooked to boost control. I have read some external wastegate have differant spings to affect boost level even with a boost control. Have you try running with no vac/boost line to wastegate? [Remember need to watch you boost gauge carefully and not overboost. Do you still have a catalic convertor [spelling]? if plugged will affect boost. Do you have a free flowing exhaust. No restrictions. Does the vam hose into turbo easy to crush? Should not be. I am assuming using a vam. When the external waste gate was install was the internal one remove or is it still there? If still there is the door on it shut? Sorry all the idea's I have for now. I know little on the external waste gate I hope this was of some help. Maurice
Actually the turbo was internally wastegated and i bought a blockoff flange. Thing is that its a nissan 7-bolt flange and i cant for the life of me find a company or someone that makes that gasket so i used an old one off my nissan that was in decent shape. Thats probably an issue so i will take it apart tomorrow. Thing is though that i dont see or feel anything coming out of the flange or in the engine bay(my car smokes a bit). Turbo is newly rebuilt with 360 degree bearing and it spins like a dream.
I also have been leaving the vacuum line off the gate to test it with no luck. Thanks and ill update the issue.
7 bolt flange. You talking turbo to manifold or turbo to elbow for exhaust pipe? What is brand of turbo.
Maybe a Garrett turbo. Here is their site catalog. Maybe can get there or one of there dealers. http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...s/catalog.html
A another option is like Stinger does on the 2.3 turbo. Make a flange to fit turbo that has downpipe made with it. That gets rid of stock waste gate. Half way down on this link. http://www.stinger-performance.com/headerparts.html
Look at my picture of my turbo motor of the 3"downpipe just take the pipe all the way to the turbo instead of like me use the internal waste gate.
Make sure turbo spins easily by hand. If it does I would check your intake plumbing first. One of the hoses may not be clamped or on well. When boost builts it will try to open up somewhere in the intake to blow the pressure out. Usually it's the rubber/silicone couplers. I've found that to be the most common cause. If all is good there your wastegate may be bad.

Ok the issue was stupid, but innocent all the same. Turns out while calling a friend of mine to consult what he thinks he pointed out that there is suppose to be a metal ring inside the wastegate on the plunger end to take up the gap and to act as a wear surface..... Well it wasn't there but i remembered finding a metal ring that looked important sitting under my car. Ironically it fits perfectly in the hole. Thanks for all your help!
Dont feel bad. I welded a bung for a wide band o2 on an exhaust a few days ago & forgot to put the clamp on, ended up having to cut the pipe in half, sliding the clamp on & rewelding the pipe back together :P
