Default 2.3l good and bad

hello, everyone. i recently sold my 2002 gt convertible due to financial issues. was consideringn getting an older camaro but decided that i can not go on without a stang so i figured i'd get a 5.0 but, i was wondering if the 2.3l are any good? i have someone that want's to sell me a 87' for 1500. is this a good price? it will need paint, headliner, new power steering hose, and the tint removed. he also has a 400 big block that he will throw in for $400 dollars more. so my questions are what are some of the pros and cons of the 2.3l and would i be able to put this 400 big block in with little to no extra modifications needed?
