TC10284

I have an 89 Mustang 4cyl. It has been on the road (again) for about 6 months. Since that time, the instrument lights have been finicky about working. When I switch on the headlights, sometimes the instruments would light and sometimes they wouldn't. In cases they wouldn't, I had to tap on the top of the dash over the top of the instrument cluster and they would come on. Lately this has not worked.

I've checked all the fuses, specifically #4 and #13 and they are not blown.

The dimmer switch doesn't seem to have any effect on the instrument cluster.

Turn signal indicators work fine, as well as battery, check engine, and one other indicator that I cannot recall.

Any suggestions?

My 91 does the same thing. If I mess with the dimmer switch the lights will come on. Don't turn the interior light on but just wiggle the switch against the brightest setting.

Get some electrical contact cleaner and squirt out the headlight and dimmer switches. This may require some disassembly to access the switch contacts but I'll bet it would solve the problem.
