Default Odometer not working?

Just got my car back from the body shop and the odometer / trip meter isnt workin (ie: its not rolling). Its a 98 Mustang GT so its got the analog meter. I ripped the instrument cluster out and its all connected, everything's set on the tranny. How does the Odometer run? is it a seperate gear or is it run off the speedo or what?

do your dash lights and all work? I know that in my 95 when it burnt up the fuse that controlled the dash lights everything stopped working but the tach.

There is a gear in there that runs it. My odometer and trip meter wasn't working and when I took it apart, the gear was just brittle and was stripped..

I worked on a Ford Ranger, swapped the cluster instead of the gear because it actually was cheaper, and it was fixed. If thats not the problem, then its the cable going to the cluster from the trans

Mine did the same thing. I swapped out my mileage with a cobra cluster and it was atually the electronics servo that initiates the gear to move! That was bad. It's mounted on the same panel(blue plastic)as the ododmeter and trip readings. It's a silver cylindrical thing.

I have the same problem. So you guys are saying that if I swap the clusters, it'll be fixed?

well you could swap clusters and it should fix it, but on a stang, its cheaper the buy the little gear. On a ranger I picked up a cluster for 17 bux shipped because of low demand, and the gears were 25 + shipping, so I went with the cluster. On a stang, clusters are gonna be more expensive because of demand, the gear would more than likely be cheaper
