94 Mustang Radiator Overflow

94 Mustang Radiator Overflow
This is an intermittent problem. Occasionally the antifreeze will get sucked into the overflow tank and not return to the radiator/cooling system. Engine begins to overheat, loose all heat, etc. First went through several thermostats, then had radiator boiled and cleaned and flushed, etc. It is not loosing coolant, and have been assured the heads/gaskets are fine. When the overflow tank fills and the problem begins occuring, a simple loosening of the radiator cap (on my third different radiator cap now - 16 lb cap) will get the coolant moving the way it is suppose to. I have had this to three different techs now, and still looking for a solution. Any help or further suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like the system is losing pressure. If you lose pressure then the system won't draw back from the overflow tank, hence the heavier cap for the radiator. Make sure your cap seals tight against the radiator and that there isn't a hole some where in the system.

You ARE losing coolant.The overflow tank should pretty much stay at the levels marked on the side(HOT-COLD).The coolant could be leaking out somewhere you can't see through a freeze plug or a small leak into the engine.Check the oil to see if it looks like it has milky looking goop on the dipstick or under the fill cap.Drive the car about an hour with a full radiator and bring it home and look for leaks.

nope, not losing anti freeze at all. This situation has been going on for two years, and have never seen a drop of anykind of fluid underneath the car on the driveway. The car can go for 2 or 3 months at a time without this occurring. That is why we did the thermostat replacement several times, thinking we were getting bad tstats. For some reason, the overflow tank fills up and then the antifreeze won't go back into the radiator. Have even replaced the hose from the overflow to the radiator.

Are you using a two way radiator cap?If not,then the coolant won't return to the system when the engine cools off.This will show up as collapsed radiator hoses when the engine cools off.My last car,a 93 Lincoln MK VIII,had the same symptoms as yours and I could never find a leak either.But it was going somewhere,the overflow tank would show less than full and when you would fill it back up it would go for quite a while before it would need attention.

yep, 2 way cap. Please keep in mind this is an intermittent problem that doesn't occur every day, or every week for that matter. It might function properly for a month or two, then overflow into the overflow tank and stay there without getting sucked back into the radiator. That is why we did the complete radiator clean out and flush. Which didn't help.
