Default How To Set Ignition Timing?

Well recently I upgraded the carb on my 2v cleveland to a 670 street avenger and a performer intake and im having problems with the car backfiring through the exhaust and carb sometimes when its cold, I looked into the carbs manual and looked into the trouble shooting and they all said that a cause could be the ignition timing, I asked a few people and they all told me I need to change the timing to deal with the bigger carb.

Theres one problem though, I don't know how to [sm=smiley23.gif].

Could I do this myself? If not how much do they charge to tune the timing?

If the timing needs reset and you do not have a timing light you can do it by loosening the Dizzy hold down bolt, start the motor and then turn the Dizzy a little bit at a time very slowly until it sounds real good go a little past that point until it starts to sound just a little rough and then turn it back until it sounds real good again and tighten it back down in that spot. That should get it pretty close!Hope this helps you and I hope I explained it right.Good luck!!PS Turn the dizzy holding the side of it not the wires!!

I am too lazy to type it all out tonight,,,, so here is a link,,,

All you should need is a timing light and some chalk!

Don't let the long process intimidate you, it is really an easy process, and a process that is good to know when working with any car more than 10 or 15 years old.

there is alot of things i know how to do, and some i dont know. but im a fast learner and want to do everything on this car myself. or with the help of a friend. i hate taking the car to a repair shop. the only thing i did was take it to and transmission shop, bc i didnt want to mess with the tranny. and i want to kick myself for not trying it myself.
if i can figure out electrical wiring and work on todays brand new cars, then i should be able to pick this classic car up easily.

anyway i would love any help or advise. im in staten island.

also i believe you should learn, read and ask as many questions before you try something new. knowledge is power. it cant hurt
