Default 6 Cylinder Gas Mileage??

I'm looking at buying a 64-68 mustang and was wanting to know what kind of gas mileage I could expect to get from a stock 6 cylinder? What improvements could I do to help the mileage on the car? Thanks!!

I've heard anywhere from 12 to 20's, depending on the condition of the engine and driving style. I suggest you check out the fordsix.com site, those guys really know their 6's, both performance and economy.

+1, fordsix.com is great. I got around 25 mpg hwy, 20mpg city, stock. Haven't really tested on the new engine.

I haven't done anything to my engine yet (I6) and it has been in the shop since I bought it but I understand the petronix ignition kits make a big difference in driveablility and help w/ gas mileage,

x2 on the Pertronix. Just get it. It's worth it.

As to MPG's, I would think with a light foot you could see 30. Hell, even midsize Chevys in the '50's with 235 I6's were seeing 25+mpg on steady-speed runs on the backroads.

I've alway heard between 20-28ish, but I think you could definitly get into the high 30's with one if you tried.

Manual would help
Lighter rear gears would help (what do they have stock?)
A tune up and new filters
And the most important, a driver tune up.. you'd be amazed at how much u can gain by changing your driving techniques

Ur terrain is going to effect it too. You live in the mountains or nice flats?

I do see that changing the gears and maybe an auto trans would help, but it's definitely not going to pay for itself for a while. Mine had 3.20 gears and I still got good mileage. I wouldn't drop it down to 2.xx just to gain some miniscule amount.

baddog is right-on with the technique. A light foot will help tremendously

Im on another forum that deals with modifying cars for fuel economic reasons. My record is currently 78mpg average tank[8D], no, not in a mustang...

Dropping the gears to a 2.xx WOULD help, but I personally wouldnt do it unless alot of driving was highway. I was just throwing it out there for spectulation...
