Default 4.6L vs LS1/LT1

I was just wondering...........Are there any advantages to having a 4.6L over an LS1/LT1 or vise-versa? What are the good points and bad points of each? What are the major differences? I mean, I know that the LS1/LT1s are bigger and faster, but are they BETTER than the 4.6L as far as reliability? Let's just say a person was interested in buying a sports car like a Mustang or Camaro and looks didn't matter. Lets say they wanted to know which of the two would be the better overall vehicle. Thanks!!!!

Just my opinion...But I think the F-Bodies don't seem to hold up as well as the Mustangs. There is no doubt the LS1 is a monster of a motor and does very well with intake and cam when compared to a 2V GT. However the DOHC FI '03-'04 Cobra motor is another story.

I happen to agree. The OHC 4.6s should last longer without too many problems.

However, The LS1 is a monster (and it's 1.1 liters bigger) and I have had plenty of chebby motors and the never die.

We all know the F-body will leave a Mustang miles behind them in the twisties.

We all know the LS1 is a badass motor that responds to mods like it's possessed.

When it comes down to reliability, it's not the motors that is the problem. GM cuts EVERY CORNER possible with the production of the F-body. They have rear ends that tend to break from launching lightly from even idle, while some guys can do 4k launches and not break anything. It is well known within the GM community that about 80,000 miles is the point of no return for a F-body. You'll need several grand to keep the car in good shape. They have VERY heavy doors, which like to sag with age, some also come equipped with T-tops and they are notorious for leaking. Things like Opti-Spark are also tricky things for your mechanic who figures out whats wrong by trouble codes only.

When it comes to reliability, the Mustang is leaps and bounds ahead of the F-body. Also, a SOHC/DOHC engine generally produces LESS stress on any given part than a push-rod motor, but there are a lot more parts that can break.

So a 4.6 will be cheaper to maintain, while it'll be harder and more expensive to modify and get you less HP results when it comes to modifications.

dude ford is cheap too. thats why all the ford interiors look like ****. cuz if they can save one dollar on each f-150 they cut costs by like 3 million so they same about 100-200 per ford and save like 600 extra large

My old LT1 had 100k on it....it still ran like a raped ape. The interior was holding up fine, the doors were fine, the t-tops were fine. Window motor did go out, and the headlight grinded. I tell you though, my LS1 seems leaps and bounds nicer than my LT1 did. In every aspect. I've had 0 problems with my LS1 and it's pushing 83k miles. And trust me, it gets abused.

I have a lot of friends with both f-bodies and Mustangs. I've seen far more motor problems from Mustangs and far more cosmetic problems from f-bodies.

Well a 99+ GT will run real even with an LT1 as far as performance.

I have ran dead even with several Z28 LT1's. Now my friends LS1 is another story. I have so much respect for that car after one ride in it.

Well LS1's are very sneaky cars...You could see one driving down the street and blow the doors off of that stock LS1 in your modded stang....And you can also try to do the same thing to, what you thought was also a stock LS1 and he will pull like 10 cars on you. You cant always tell with those bastards...SAME WITH THE 03-04 COBRA'S
