Default Speedo/Gauge Cluster Question

I just bought a 1988 mustang gt hatchback. It has an aftermarket whiteface gauge cluster. By that I mean, it has the whiteface gauges. The speedo goes up to 145mph and the tack redlines at 6000rpm (I believe). I am wondering if the 88's came stock with a speedo that went up to 145mph? I know the tach is off, but is the speedo right. I am concerned because if the person before me just slapped a new gauge piece on, would the speedo be correct? If anyone knows or has any information about this I would greatly appreciate it. I am not trying to go down the road thinking I am doing 45mph and have a cop clock me going faster. Also, the gauges don't light up that well. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to find a stock display for that year car? or how to make the aftermarket whiteface gauges accurate and light up better? Thanks for any and all help.

my 88 has the 88mph speedo. Your cluster might have been replaced or just the speedo hith a 140mph unit.Theres a ton of em on ebay. my guess is that the yahoo who sold you the car just put the white face displays over the stock gauges. Not sure how to make light up better unless your not getting enough juice to provide enough light with your cars charging system?

Well, I put a charging system to the car, and everything there looks great. I guess the only way to find out if the gauge is accurate is to go out with someone following me and check my speed. Thanks for the input.
