Default what transmission should i use?

Hi guys,

Im redoing a 1989 Lincoln Mark VII, although its not a mustang, I know you guys all know the drivetrain really well.
First thing I plan on doing is my transmission. It has the AOD, but its overdrive is done, and shifts are not great. I want definately want to go to a stick. The T5 is a pretty easy swap I'm told, but I was reading an article about an old 1971 mustang buildup and they used a T56 from a viper. Now I dont ever plan on putting out GOBS of power, but i do like the prospect of tighter rear end gears and a 6th gear to account for that on the highway. The article quoted under 2000rpm at 75 mph with 4.11 gears i think.

Im VERY new to the car, but i love it!

If you guys can me some advice, dosnt have to be on the 6 speed, just i for sure want to go stick, other than that im open to suggestion!

thanks in advance for your help

Jeff

I am a bit concerned about using the Borg t5, due to the extra weight. Im told the tremec TKO would be a stronger better bet. From what i can see the tremec should run about 1800 and the T56 about 2500.

a t56 is worth more than that whole car. i'd just stick a t5 in it.

thanks for the help figuring out what my car is worth. Any of these transmissions is worht more than my car, but thats the idea, im working on it.

has anyone done the t56 here who can tell me of the experience? any ideas on the weight concerns for the borg? is the tremec worth the extra cash?

tremec and borg are the same deal. i've rebuilt a few 56's in vettes, but theyre a little different than 56's out of cobras and camaros. vette trannys are in the rear of the car.

what do you need to know about it?

ok well after some looking, i realize the T56 they used in that article had the 0.5 6th gear, from the viper. That transmission is running about $3700 and i cant justify that. The 2500 for the t56 from tremec would be doable but its got a 0.62 6th and the TKO 600 has a 0.63, so its clearly not worth the money for me.

The difference between the Borg and tremec T5s may be negligable, but what about the TKO series? im assuming there a better transmission considering they are running 800-1000 more than the borg t5.

this is what im now questioning, is the TKO 1000 dollars better than the t5?

thanks again guys for the help, I really appreciate it! I know its not a mustang
